You guys, always ragging on the auto!!! I love mine...

and BTW, it's a 61 you want :flipoff2: ...turbo diesel, high roof, cable lockers, PTO, FF and available with 5spd or auto. :D

and quiet...there's more shag carpet in my rig then I would care to mention...

Can't believe no one mentioned this but how 'bout the fact 80s don't rust out?

lifting an 80 is cheaper

the 60 has more interior room

for diesel buffs I can see an advantage with the 60 series

on the coolness factor, since 80s were not sold in Canada except for one year as the lx450 they have a much more distinct personality here. 60s are still a dime a dozen in BC.

I can't tell if this is the 80s section or the 60s section, what's going on here guys????!!!!
Seriously though, I have been debating this same question as well and I can't decide between the two. Every time I think i've made up my mind I read something on here that changes my thinking or I see a cruiser while i'm driving and start droolin'.

I can say that I have driven my 60 from Newport, RI to San Diego in about 4 days and it honestly wasn't that bad(aside from the gas mileage). I have the OMEs (light front, medium rear) and while it is slightly bumpy, the more weight i have in it the better it rides. I guess that is an excuse for armor and bumpers....right? I can't comment on the off-road side of the house yet, but on-road is tolerable.

Having said that my brother has a '97 CE lockers, the whole nine yards. It is very nice. But somehow I feel more at home in the 60. It definitely has SOUL, and everytime I look at it, I think damn that is an awesome truck (even with all the rust).

My opinion is if you care about the SOUL/history buy a 60/2. If you want something that rides nice for occasional offroad go 80. If you have the cash buy both (one day!!). If your going to do heavy stuff its up to you, both seem more than up to the task from what I have seen on this board. If you want the chicks get the 60/2!!!!! Both are great vehicles, it basically comes down to what stirs your heart more.

What do you guys think about this...
I'm thinking about taking this route with a 6?:

round headlights of course!!!
3fe
h55f
rear sway
ome
long range fuel tank
various other mods eventually...

I'm trying to combine the best of both the 60 and 62. Hopefully, I will find the time and the $$$$. Am I crazy??? and don't worry you guys will be the first to know when it happens!!

Chuck,

Yes I am concerned about Soul. It is one of the most important things in my next truck purchase. My recent shotgun purchase had Soul too. I just love it, and the guys at the range just drool. I prefer to buy something that really looks cool to me. Alot of the guys here talk about comfort of the 80 over the 62. Look guys your talking to guy who has a 4-Runner with 319K miles on the original seats. When I drove the 60 the other night it felt like a new truck, lol.
The wife rode in the 60 and said yes this is nice, this is what you need, lots of interior room.
Gman.

Yeah, especially if your wife likes it. You have the green light.

I have been teaching my fiance to drive stick in the 60 and now she likes it.

I always get questions about it too!! It always makes you feel good when another cruiser owner waves to you...

Chuck

are you a mom? do you like soccer? if not dont get the 80 :flipoff2: JK they are both pretty hard core trucks and take you were ya need to go....the 60 def has more soul tho... :D

Weight - At 4200 lbs. the FJ60 is almost half the weight of the FZJ80. This makes the 60 a little more nimble off road.

Huh? The Curb weight of fzj80 is 4760, while a 62 is 4480. My 62 Weighs 4700lbs, according to the scales at our local dump.

I have owned both.... The 60/62 is the pinnacle of 4WD engineering - best model of any manufacturer ever - honest.

There you go!

An armoured, trail prepped 80 will be about 6,000 lbs. Mine weighs 6,240 lbs. Unintentionally it is 3,120 lbs per axle, a perfect 50/50 bias.

I've owned both and love both. A stock 60 definitely has more cool apeal to me than a stock 80. But then again, I feel the same way about 55s over 60s and 45LVs over 55s and....I could go on. Never did like the 62 all that much. They're nice, you get 4.11s and auto, but it seemed like those years between 88 and 92 Toyota didn't really know what they wanted to do yet and experimented with a few things. Thus all the change over to find perfection in 93. But hands down the best wheeler is a stock 80 with lockers. Both my 60 and my 80 turn heads, but I give the tie breaker to the 80 because it has WAY more mods.

If you're the type to keep the tinhg forever, you might as well go straight for the 80 because the more you get emersed in the culture...the more envious you'll be.

Good Luck.

Ok,

What about pulling a trailer that weighs approx. 1500 lbs with the 62? Any problems with that? Also does the 62 get alot less gas mileage than the 80?

You guys are great, learned more in a couple days here than most learn in a lifetime.

Steve
