Benji,

Sorry I keep changing the subject. But you have to admit for a rookie like me, this has been a very informative thread for me and hopefully others.

Thanks
Steve

No problem, I think it's fun. Well, have you decided? Go with your instinct. I like my 60. Now, I would rather my wife drive an 80. These are concerns. I think both have lots o style. Both are very capable. Both are LAND CRUISERS.

Enjoy your decision

B,

I have strong leanings towards the 62 simply because of that two tone Gray Model. Man that is the prettiest thing I have seen in metal in a long time. To me the 60's are just a cooler looking truck. I know the 80's are better 4 wheel, have better suspensions, more plush, etc. I know, I know.

But COOL is COOL.

HZJ,

You said your truck gets 23 mpg with the original 2F. Others have mentioned they only get 10 mpg.
From what I have read the 60's stock weigh about 4400 pds. My 4 runner weighs that much and I get 21 mpg or so in it.
So what kind of mpg do you get on your 60-62?

I would say the average gas mileage for a 60/62 is prolly 12-14mpg. Any arguments?

i get about 10 to 12 with my set up and driving style.

Hey HZJ60 guy,

When I drive my FJ-62 I get about 13 MPG !!!
When I turn the key in my FJ-62 it starts!!
When I shift into drive my car moves!!
When I press on the gas the RPMs go up!!
I have spark plugs!!!
I can light my fuel with a match!!

Doesn't that sound like a snotty little bratt ???????

Back to the topic at hand.

As I stated before I love both models of cruiser. The FZJ-80 is much smoother in almost every situation (stock). I still love my FJ-62 though and I almost prefer the FJ-62, but I think it has more to do with my love of the car not the advantages or disadvatags it holds over the 80 series. The 80 series is the more advanced version if the 62 series. Like I said before I love them both, but the FJ-62 holds a place in my heart. It was the first model TLC I owned, and the FJ-60 was the first one my father bought new in 1984 so I think a am a little bias. The FJ-60 and FJ-62 have the same sized interior from what I remember, great for sleeping two on a camping trip.

Andrew,

Great post.

"great for sleeping two on a camping trip. "

HELL YEA!

While I can appreciate tent camping the wife and I have a air matress that fits between the rear wheel wells in my 60. Very comfortable and fairly warm, last campout everybody froze and had trouble sleeping and we popped the hatch and crawled out well rested and ready for the day.

Steve:

For Power the FZJ80 engine is the winner. For simplicity, the 2f on the FJ60 wins.

The manual tranny is better, IMHO, than the auto for OR use. That said, I swapped the standard FJ60 4 speed for a Toyota H55F 5 speed with over drive. Huge improvment - and a costly mod.

The FJ80 suspension is better over the road. The standard suspension on the 60 is rough - the full OME suspension and FJ62 rear sway bar that I have on my 60 makes it much better than stock on and off road. Another costly mod. Remeber - even the new Corvette has rear leaf springs...

Weight - At 4200 lbs. the FJ60 is almost half the weight of the FZJ80. This makes the 60 a little more nimble off road.

Cool Factor - The FJ60 OWNS cool. Despite its great capability, the FZJ80 looks like a mall crusier (My opinion!)

Cost - nothing to choose here. If you get a 60, you'll spend money on mods. I spent enough on my 60 to buy a late model FZJ80. But then I would not have a 60!

For your intended use, I suggest that you get a low mileage, late model year FZJ80 with FACTORY LOCKERS. It will drive good on highway or secondary roads, haul dogs, guns, and misc, crap to and from just about anywhere. Your wife will like it better.

I’m from the future. Upon reading I had to say something. Now In 2022, it’s normal to see low milage 3x locked 80 series selling over 30k. Just thought I would add. If you were smart you would have bought one then and kept it. Haha.

Even 3 years ago triple locked 80's with 1hdt were going for 10k

Well I started this thread in 2004. Bought a 96 80 series 18+ years ago. Best damn decision I ever made on car, Suv. She has about 430k miles on her and I am still using her for long distance hunting trips. A couple of years ago I went to NW Ontario, 30 hour drive one way. Long live Cruisers .....

Can you tell me the disadvantages and advantages of a 60 vs. 80? I actually like the boxie look of the 60 over the 80. I know they are older truck, but parts are available too.
Lets hear from both sides please.

Thanks
Steve

here is one fundamental difference between a 3FE FJ62 and a 3FE FJ80 i recently discovered .........

- the air intake to valve cover breather hoses are different ?

and

something else they both had in common too ?

both were DISC. / NLA ?

imagine that ?

MR. T did us wrong again both the 62 and the 80 .......

so i fixed that common problem with 2 uniquely different 100% Toyota OEM genuine Parts Solutions ........

they both LIVE ONCE again ! :D
