The backing plates are not the same as your rear axle....
You would do better swapping the whole rear axle assembly, or find a 08/80 and later 40 rear axle, as it would have the same rear brake assembly as the 60 series and not be 3" wider.
yes the whole rear drum brake assembly off a 60 series is directly interchangeable and at the same time u get the added bonus of the e-brake set up but if you do the conversion u need to use spring mounting plates on the rear from a fj40 because the mounting plates on 45's dont have enough clearance for the handbrakecable to the shock.

I'm pretty sure this is not right. The bolt pattern mounting the backing plates to the axle is entirely different. THe 40 series from 78 uses 5-6 10mm bolts, the late 40 series and all 60 series use 4 12mm bolts. Maybe it's different overseas, but I dowbt it. I agree with Poser-find an 81 up FJ4x axle and use that.
I take it we're not talking about a full floater rear end... I think the best option would be to install disc brakes and forget about drum brakes altogether.
yeh sorry the conversion only works on late model cruisers because of the difference in the bolt pattern so you'd have to source a axle off a later model cruiser - if u think its worth it.
