I'd like to install a CB radio in the open gap below th radio. Would greatly
appreciate some input in regards to what models make the cleanest fit.
Thanks!

Uniden 510 Pro

It fits with little to no modification in that slot, and you can get them for around $40 from several retailers.

There may be others (i.e. radioshack, etc), but this is the best bang for the buck, size, features for most of our CB uses on the trail. Antenna selection and placement is far more critical to performance than the head unit.

I hate to say it....

But do a search...I did a write up on it a while back....

I can try to find it if you can't get it here. But the same info as above - I have a RS CB, works fine. and is a clean install - fits perfect in the pocket.

gosh, I just remember seeing a pic of one in that location. Looks like it fits perfect. I mounted mine between the center console and the driver's seat. I like there because its easy to adjust while I'm driving.

Here's the writeup...

CB Instructions:

Antenna... I just picked up a magnetic mount one from RS and stow it in the back until I need it, and stick it up top and run the wire through the window or close it in the door, carefully.
first, take off the trim around the climate controls, you'll need to pull out the ashtray and take out the two screws behind it and the whole thing will pull out. Don't forget to pull the little lever doo-hickies for the fan, temp, and stuff.
Second, take out the four screws holding the pocket, it too, will come right out.
Now, take the empty pocket to your friendly neighborhood Radio Shack or electronics store and find a small CB that will fit. The one I have fits perfectly, with about 1/4" space on all sides. I used a dremel tool to cut out the back of it to run wires, and give it a little more depth.

Wiring: easy stuff. I tapped into the power from the cig. lighter and hooked up the ground. Here's the slick part...since CB's that small don't usually have speakers in the unit, you need to get a remote speaker. In my 86 I have the space for a speaker in the dash-pad on top (all those holes). I can't remember if there was a speaker there or I bought one to fit, it's a standard size. That way you don't have a big ugly speaker to install and the sound is right there where you can hear it. I think I had to get to it by taking out the glove box insert.
then, just put everything together and you should good to go. (oh, test it before putting everything together, I've definitely wired things, reassembled only to find I didn't hook up the ground properly or some other stupid thing).
I have crappy picture of the interior where you can figure out what it looks like if you want, I can email it to you.

I have pics of the install, and finished product...but can't re-size here at work. PM me, I'll email...

Just ordered a 510 from amazon for $45.00. Did a search but could only find
80 series rig installs, maybe I missed it...Cardinal, sure like your trick to
use the speaker on top of my dash, makes for a clean, tidy install and I will
be using it. Thanks again. Jeff

I'm not sure if you can see here my CB down under my radio ..
