6 stud hub question (1 Viewer)

Ive heard a lot about the 6 pin hub mod, especially on pirate, and have been thinking about doing it for a while now. I just have a couple of questions.

It seems to me the easiest way to make sure all the holes line up perfect for a tight fit would be to bolt the freewheel hub to the hub proper and drill through both of them. Is this acceptable, or should i do it like the stock pins and have them sticking into a blind hole? It looks like a boss is cast into the hub body for the stock pins which tells me there might not be enough material for a blind hole in the other 4 locations.

Do most people source metric dowels from toyota? I was thinking about getting some drill stock that is very close to stock size and using that. I can get it at work cheap and its good steel.

use stock toyota and make sure the holes are all the same. It would suck to have the hub only fit one, specific way..

I would send it to Airride for the mod.. Cheap and he does god work..

Where is airride located? Ive never heard of them/him.

Honestly, I would do it myself on a mill or drill press with the appropriate metric sized dowel pins.

MSC or Reid Tool would be your best bet for the pins

I think someone in the 60s forum mentioned they were available from toyota for like a buck a piece.

The only thing i have access to that could work for this is a drill press, my thought was to use a gasket to find the center of all the holes, that should work ok.

You have to ensure that its Perfect.. I don't trust my Ghetto Drill Press and a paper gasket for something like this.. if its not Dead on, it will be a pain to get the hub on, and if its over drilled it wont be effective..

Appropriate metric drill bit, reamer and then dowel pin and away you go.
Assemble lockout to hub, position accordingly and drill, ream and press.....voila.

I left two stock and used four bigger. Only fits two ways but I don't see a problem with that. My drill press is one of those old Craftsman cast iron body models, and it's not overly accurate - but I managed to get everything lined up close enough to work. I drilled from the mounting surface so that I could leave some material on the outside in case a dowel came loose so it wouldn't come all the way out - but that was a waste of time, once the dowels were in they're not working out. Better safe than sorry thou.

That sounds really good to me. I thought maybe i could put a thin plate under between the freewheel hub and the actual hub, with holes for the stock pins, drill for the bigger dowels, then use that template to drill the other hubs, and maybe find a spare aisin and drill that. That way everything is interchangeable. I really dont feel like farming this out.
