Hello,

I have a silly question. i bought a 1981 fj40 that's had a diesel engine dropped into it. Does anyone know what kind of engine this is. I was thinking it was a B engine, but this sucker obviously has 6 cylinders.

Can someone please help me identify this?

Thanks for your help,

Griff

Yep, thats the fuel filter. I change mine every other oil change but depending on your fuel quality you may want to change it with every oil change.

I had to look up stop cable.. But, yes, I pull on a string to stop the engine!! Is that good or bad??

Well.. I'm not sure a peice of string is great.. Mine uses an old choke cable.

Its pretty common when a petrol -> diesel conversion is done to end up with a stop cable as the mechanism that it replaces, the "EDIC" is problematic to transfer over to a petrol wiring loom.. and it can often be unreliable anyhow.

The 2H is a legendary engine, hopefully this one is in good condition.. are you seeing much blow-by when you take off the oil filler cap when its running?

I hope it's in good condition too! I don't know much about diesels but always wanted one. The owner said the engine had been rebuilt a couple years ago and there was no exhaust smoke. The engine starts after after about 3 seconds when cold. I never checked the blow by but I'll test it tomorrow.

For reference.. here's the two extremes of blow by with 2Hs..

Terrible:
Excellent:

Sounds like a great engine give it a degrease and and good wash and it will come up like knew from the pics. There a rock solid diesel if serviced regularly take care off her and she will look after you. :)

Awesome! I just checked the blowby and there doesn't appear to be much. There's a tiny bit of suction, but that's probably normal.

I was a bit worried. I checked the oil and the FJ is in serious need of an oil change. I don't think I've ever seen oil this dirty. Also, it doesn't have an air filter!!

Is the oil really black? Older diesels normally have really black, sooty oil. When my brother got his first diesel (an ancient VW Rabbit) he changed the oil several times in a row trying to "flush" the engine before he realized that the oil is always inky black. However, changing the oil is a good idea on a newly purchased engine.

I think it's an older diesel engine. Looks like its been through a war!

The oil is ink black, very dirty looking. Thanks for the information. Given the faxt tgat there was no air filter, I'll definitely be changing all the necesary fluids and checking levels for all the others.

No air filter? Goodness gracious.

As others have noted.. the black oil is normal. A good test of the dirtiness of engine oil from a diesel is to smear two of your finger tips with oil from the dip stick and rub it in.. if you can clean your fingers easily with a rag afterwards.. its pretty clean. I change my oil out at 5,000klms intervals.

Thabk you for the links!

The PO also cut a big hole in the roof... Not sure why anyone would do that. From what I can tell, the dude made some questionable decisions.

the 2H, the engine that started it all for me

Same here .. it's the engine con Tencha .. my first Land Cruiser ..

I have clocked up some miles on the old 2h engines and was happy with there fuel consumption.
Don't worry about the black oil it means nothing but if you won't to check the engine condition just pull the glow plugs and do a comp test it will tell you how many 100.000 thousands of mile is left in the old girl as they normally get around 800.000 before needing a major rebuild.
It should serve your short well base very well well for the next 40 years as a daily driver. ;)
