Dropped the 0W-20 at a 4700 mile interval (total mileage is ~14k) and refilled it with 5-30 Mobil1 (the black and gray label guaranteed for 10,000 miles).

Very noticeable difference. No shaking at start up, didn’t notice any stumbling idle, less shakey when accelerating. Only put around 20 miles on it, some highway and some city.

I swapped in 5-30 at 800 miles. Engine does idle quieter.

The pronounced shimmy feeling while mildly accelerating is hardly noticeable now.

Is there any downside to swapping out to 5w-30? I assume longevity and protection will be improved. Is the 0w-20 just a fuel efficiency play?

Does it void warranty?

Its an MPG play.

I don’t see how running smoother can void the warranty. I may even mix some 10-40 in next summer.

Does the dealer service the vehicle for you or do you do it on your own/elsewhere?

I do my own maintenance typically.

I just do it myself. Going to do the oil/filter every 10,000 miles with a 7qt oil change at 5,000. I plan to change the skidplate on the next oil/filter change.

You can enter it on Carfax yourself. Note ‘Mobile1 oil and Toyota/Lexus filter’

Just saw both vids. Not sure if everyone saw this. I know majority of the discussion is about GM but they made some good points.

Nice, watched both.

The difference between 0w-30 and 5w-30 is extra polymers in the 0w that expand when heated up. Same with 5W-30 to 10W-30.

Since the owners manual in different countries recommends 5w-30 as a choice in climates like mine I will stick to that. 0W-30 may work in colder climates. Edit the video said the first number is the most important when considering a change.

So I spent some time on ChatGPT messing with this and cross referencing it.

I can’t find an oil better oil than Mobile 1 0W-30 European Car Formula. It maxes out all the catalytic converter sensitive additives and has really good wear protection. If I do not change the downpipes and use the 0W-40 I will use this oil.

TBN is good for 5,000 mile oil changes. Calcium level good for Turbo longevity.

Knowing what I know now I wouldn’t even drive off the dealer lot without swapping the oil out.

I think the Mobil 1 for European cars is not ILSAC-GF5/6 specs which most Japanese cars requires. Its SN/SJ specs. Be careful, you might lose your warranties.

Not to concerned with the warranty. Its been in 4 times for a vibrating jack and they forgot to center my steering wheel after an alignment.

I have a receipt for 0-20 from a previous oil change where the vehicle still vibrated.

I would no doubt run that 0-30 ESP Euro if I was leaving it stock and 0w-40 if modified. It meets the GCC specs just fine. I am not concerned with minor mpg improvements.

Here is a chart and link to the approvals. I definitely wouldn’t have driven it off the lot shaking like it was if I had known this and went to that 0w-30 immediately. Forget the north or south climate that is the best oil.

Walmart 0w-30

Edit, Correct ESP 0W-30 (note there is 2 types) Mobile 1 Tech Link

I believe the only real difference is 5-20 has less polymers that maintain viscosity as temps rise. (Edit: may lead to longer drain intervals?)

0w-20 needs more because of the larger swing.

Its 20 weight.

But they do vary some, not all 20,30, or 40 is equal. Look at the 0w-30 Mobile 1 esp euro stuff as an example. It bridges 5w-30 gf6a and 5w-40 229.5.

So is everyone going with the 5w-30 or the 0w-30? We all know the 0w-20 is junk.

1st Oil change coming up soon

It’s hard to beat pennzoil ultra platinum 5W-30 for the price (make sure it’s ultra platinum and not just platinum). It’s made with natural gas and is a really clean (consistent) oil on a molecular level thereby flowing considerably well at cold temps (even for a 5W-30).

The oil comparison showdown series that Project Farm did is proof in the pudding. To beat it, you really only have Amsoil which is technically slightly better, but a hell of a lot more expensive.

Staying with 0w-20 as I don't tow so I won't be at high temps, and the lower viscosity is probably better to disperse through the engine during frequent hybrid system stop/starts.
