Thanks guys. I've received quite a few trail notices. Not much for Poughkeepsie this year, looks like I'm leading a small group!!

I'd do it but you guys said no stock rigs. I wanna see the potential of this beast! I've seen some youtube videos of it and it looks doable in a stock rig as long as you take the correct line.

I've taken a stock rig with sliders up. He hit sliders and a lot of other stuff. But he got up.

Good for you, I've got a lot to do but so in need of a week for myself!

We'll, ready, meaning lets give the trail a go....as far as the truck...just installed our Gamiviti roof rack, roof rack led bar, cb antenna mount/wiring...currently ass deep into Dual battery set up that has been sitting in my garage for 3 months.

If Chris is ok having you along, go ahead and sign up for Poughkeepsie Gulch. As long as you're ok with the possibility of some carnage, everyone should run what they want. Regardless of the line, you're going to touch down in a few spots.

Stan,
Will there be some time available for fishing in Clear Lake on the Friday run? I'm trying to get my kids more practice with fly fishing and it's great for open space for back casts.

Do you have any experience or knowledge of the fishing in Crystal Lake right down the road from the campground?

I've never fished it, but I know there are fish in there and I always see people fishing it. My favorites in the area are; the Uncompahgre River, San Miguel River, Gunnison River, Silver Jack Reservoir, middle and east forks of the Cimarron river and Clear Lake (sunrise and sunset)

We will have lunch at Clear Lake and allow everyone to fish, hike, take photos and generally relax in a beautiful setting at 12,000 feet. There was still snow covering the trail last week and the lake was still covered in ice. I will check it out tomorrow and I fully expect it to be clear by the 31st. The best fishing I've had on Clear Lake was right at sunset, in the rain. We'll be there mid-day and hopefully under sunny skies. Not the best fishing conditions.

(I know you already know this @marcfj60) Clear Lake has brook trout and greenback cutthroat trout. The Greenback is the state fish of Colorado and is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. It is an absolute treat, privilege and gift to hold one of these beautiful fish. They are to be quickly unhooked and released immediately. I would prefer if everyone used barbless hooks (or at least crimp your barbs). There are plenty of brook trout in there as well. I support responsible brook trout harvest. If you don't know the difference between a brookie and a cutthroat, please ask me before you start fishing. Greenback Cutts occupy less than 1% of their historical habitat. It's the goal of every fly fisherman in Colorado to help bring this beautiful fish back. A cutthroat trout has a bright orange slash under each side of it's jaw. It's unmistakable and that's where the name cutthroat comes from.

I will bring fly rods and I'm happy to give anyone a casting lesson. The fish in Clear Lake are small (12" or less) and can be taken on dry flies or any small spinner type lure. If you're looking for size, I've caught some very large fish from the Uncompahgre and Gunnison Rivers. Both of those rivers are tough to fish and not great for folks just learning to cast. Remember..... if you're coming from out of state, you must have a Non-Resident Colorado fishing license in order to fish. You can purchase one on-line https://www.co.wildlifelicense.com/custlkup.php or RIGS Fly Shop is right in Ridgway. http://fishrigs.com/

I'll also be fishing this week and will have a better report in a few days. Before all of this 100 Series and overlanding and camping stuff...... I'm a fly fisherman first. That's how I got started in backcountry travel and Land Cruisers.

Looking forward to reconnecting with everyone, we leave next week!

Holy moly! Below sea level swamp humidity has got to go! Can't wait for some elevation.

I will be leading a small group to Ouray via as many off-highway miles as possible. I'll post a Denver to HIH5 thread soon. All are welcome and a 100 is not required for this portion of the event. Heavy rains on Red Cone Pass From the HIH4 Denver Expedition.

Here come some noobie questions...

1) What time do you head out for the trails and typically return? Much to my chagrine we will be staying in Ouray with the Grandparents in a hotel...but we will also likely be the only three generation truck :-)

2) Any trails more or less kid friendly? (2.5 and 5 yr old boys...5 yr old views winch usage as a huge success rather than failure :-))

3) With the descriptions posted how is one to choose?! They all sound amazing :-) Is there an option to say 'stick me where ever balances your schedule the best?'

4) Poughkeepsie Gulch...I have a '99 locked rear, open front, OME865's, cranked TB's, 1" body lift, and winch bumper. I run 275/70R18's (33.4") BFG KO2's and plan to add sliders before the trip. I'm a careful, but not perfect driver. How much body carnage should I expect if I choose to run this? I don't mind hitting sliders, but I still want the mall crawler to wash up ok :-)

Thanks for tips from past attendees or organizers...sorry if anything is covered elsewhere...

As far as I remember departure from camp to trails happens around 9am. Nothing wrong w staying in town you just need to plan ahead how to get the day started! You'll probably eat breakfast wherever you stay then drive so take it all into account + things like what to bring along!

Clear lake is beautiful and the most tamed of all witch makes it the friendliest to little ones IMO! Plus lots of room for them to run around up top and things to see! Also Imogine and Ophir are not too bouncy but it's a long day to run it. Worth it but can be a tad painful with cranky little ones on the back! Guess how I know! Obviously there are also some riding on the edge spots that my son was not very fan of!

I do know all these trails are amazing but there's just not enough time to run everything so pick with your gut and you can always visit again for more!

I haven't done Poughkeepsie but sounds to me like your truck should handle it.

Anyone els going to hit up Moab on there way to Ouray?
I will be driving by there on my way from NorCal and spending the week before HIH, if anyone wants to meet up let me know
