I cant believe this is rolled on..... Looks really great and has given inspiration to try it.

I could not believe it either, which is why I tried it myself. 5280's project inspired me to make an attempt at it, and I am not at all disappointed with the results so far.

This has been a good thread to follow.

Well now you've gone and done it. Post up some pics!

I sprayed Rustoleum Smoke Gray from a $10 Harbor Freight gun, it looks much better than I expected! I wound up with lots of orange peel on my first layer, but the areas that were started with the second layer are smooth as glass without any sanding/buffing or anything else. For example, the gas cap cover was only painted with coats 2 & 3, and it is very smooth.

The first coat wound up with orange peel because the paint was not thinned as much as 2 & 3. In coat 1, I thinned to the "max allowed" on the can -- 2 oz thinner + 8 oz paint. On 2 & 3, I thinned about twice as much -- about 4 oz thinner + 8 oz paint (1 part thinner, 2 parts paint, or around 30% thinner/70% paint).

Suggestions:

* Preparation is critical! I roughed with 80 grit, then wet sanded with 220. The areas that I didn't prepare properly show through.
* Practice with the gun!
* Wait at least 24 hours between coats!
* Don't worry about bugs -- bugs wipe off after the paint is dry, and the only thing left in the paint is the bug paws. Trust me, bug paws aren't all that big.
* Use a respirator, even when you are sanding!
* This stuff takes a long time to dry. It has been a month now (yes, a cold month, but still a month), and I can dent the paint with my fingernail. I don't want to sand it until it dries hard. Meantime, I'm left with the orange peel -- which is still better than it was before I started the project.

like everyone else on this thread i am in the middle of getting my 40 ready for painting. The hard part is that she is my DD and my question would be can i do this type of painting to my 40 and still drive it?

You could -

This would be the scenario, paint the entire thing in one sitting, let it dry overnight, pull masking,

drive it,

get it home and sand it, remask it, paint the entire thing, let it dry overnight, Repeat, about 8 times. It would be tough.

I would love to check out this rig in person. I will be starting the paint on my truck as soon as the weather warms up.

Hi Guys i had some requests to post up some photos of the truck now that the painst been on a while, I tell you its holding up great.

Unfortunately, looks like he hasn't been active on here in years! Lots of information on YouTube about spraying/rolling Rust-o-leum paints for this type of stuff.
