Do the students in your shop need another "practice vehicle" for body repair???? I do get the impression that body work sucks and my resources and experience are non existent which complicates things further. Im not going for perfection here. Just looking patch holes and keep it from getting any worse that what it already is.
 
If I were you I would treat it like a wheeler. Chop out the rust and replace it with armor. In fact you dont even need rockers on a wheeler. Chop them out and weld a piece of 2xsomething box to the body and call it done, or boat side it.

Todd took the time to make everything look like it was original. he reproduced all the seams, lips, flanges, beads, etc....

You mentioned in the other thread your concern about whether this would be a good learner for body work? I cant think of a better candidate. Its simple, very few compound body panels, it doesn't have to look perfect, the 40 is a very forgiving vehicle for body flaws, and it could make you money.

I have two 350 chevy's and turbo 400 trans (two wheel drive) for it if you decided to move over to the dark side. One of the 350's is my old race motor .030 over flat top with a Crane cam 480/480 lift 108 duration.
 
No go on the 40. Its good from far but far from good. Would need alot of effort that is way beyond my comfort level for a restore project. Motor appeared to be seized and the body rust was much more apparent in the day light. It's best use is probably as a parts vehicle for a 40 enthusiast.
 
What about bar decor?
 
Bummmer that it didn't suit your needs...was a good price for a starter project
 
Its still worth 500$, just not to Dan.

How many times do you think that die paid for itself?
About $5 worth of material.
 
if the body was solid or if it had been running, it would probably be a different story. But since we werent able to turn the engine by hand, and the body was in worse shape than it appeared, I would be starting way over my head. The price was ideal for me since Im working on a budget and if it had been complete or running, it would have fit in.

I myself dont find myself to be a big fan of the fj40 but John's idea of the 22re is really good and sparked my interest of eventually dropping in a 3rz to replace the 1F. This 40 could definitely be of value to someone with resources to either part it or restore it. But since I have neither, as john said, its not worth it to me.
