I just bought a 60 with the 5 speed already installed. It runs and drives perferct.

The main issue is that the shifter feels about 2 to 3 inches closer to the passenger side. When shifting into 5th it I really have to reach over it seems. I'm 6'4" and have a long reach fyi.

Does anyone else have the same symptoms or a cure? Torch and turn?

I wonder if you somehow ended up with a right-hand drive shift lever. Sitting neutral the lever should be angled slightly toward the driver. Replacing my 4 spd with 5 spd did not make any significant change in the feel of 1 - 4 shifts.

That is a good point. Do you have a pic of yours?
Nothing handy and my camera is at work, but I can tell you that my shifter sits a good 10 to 15 degrees toward the driver seat. Hitting 5th requires no leaning or stretch (and I'm a little guy).

Hmmm. I don't have this problem at all with my H55F. Is this a Toyota tranny or somethin else?

Does it have a rubber insert in the shifter and the middle part gets quite fat then goes real skiiny inside the fat tube?

If so it it a overseas unit, you will have to heat carfully as I have snapped the rod. It also makes the rubber melt inside the tub.

Edit, must also tell that the shifter I speak of our new model shifters out of 1990 plus 7 series trucks.

Quite possibly the later models such as 1988 and older might be the skinny one piece shifter like we got in Canada.

Goodluck..

I thought most dealers sold the aftermarket H55F without the shifter and you could use the existing 4 speed shifter? If this was the case you could pick up a used four speed shifter assembly to replace what is there.

The four speed shifter is different and will not work.

You can pull the shifter out and heat and bend it or knuckle up for a new from toyota northa american version. We have bent a couple and only one broke.

You can't just bend it, its full of rubber. Toss it and get a LHD one or chop it off close to the bottom and weld it to a four speed one (or a beer tap handle).

Do the later, long, H42s have the ball and nylon cup on the bottom of the shifter rather than the blade style? If so, you could use one of those.

think I'm going to pony up the $$ and get a new one. I wonder if cruiserdan can procure one?

Is it full of rubber closer to the bottom? (It would look funny if it was bent right in the middle, I was thinking he could straighten it more towards the bottom.)

.....my vote is for the beer tap handle!!!!!!
