Been lurking and reading about auto 5-speed options. Is there really no option for a 60/62?

I currently have an H55 but Austin’s traffic is sucking the life out of driving it.

Just curious about any options available.

Buy a tdi vw for cheap and call it a day. Have an HJ61 and a 100 series. My commute is 45 miles each way. made crazy sense for my situation to buy a 9k 2013 TDI Jetta

That sounds difficult. Conversion to a different engine, LS or 1uz with a 5 speed auto might be an option.

To clarify my comment about traffic wasn’t about my rig being a dd or commuter.

It’s more that Austin’s traffic is what initiated me looking to what options are even possible.

I first started with pondering an 80 series motor and transmission and hit a dead wall.

Next I’ve been looking for a more modern Toyota V6 possibly with a 4Runner tranny even...

Looking towards a V8 and GM found lots of problems with making V8s work in a 60/62. They seemed finicky....plus I’d like to keep to Toyota if possible.

Curious where you hit a dead wall on the early FZJ80 drivetrain in the 60/62. A few have done it and I have been contemplating it. Just curious where that thought ended.

There are lots of people who have made V8’s work in 60/62’s without issue. Both running Toyota manual transmissions or other autos. There are adapter kits available.

I have been commuting in NYC traffic for more than 10 years years with a stick. Never really made me think to buy another vehicle. After 200k miles on my scion xd, the company bought me a chevy traverse. I miss the xd to say the least.

I'm old and have never had a automatic transmission until relatively recently. Use to live in the bay area too (lots of traffic). Not sure what the issue is with a stick and traffic. And you have a real sweet tranny too. Anyhow, that's me, and this is you.

I assume you have a 60 since the 62 already came with a auto (although you could have put a H55 behind a 3FE). Five speed autos are new compared to these vehicles. Even if you could adapt it to these engines, they are all computer controlled which will make the swap even harder. The only practical solution is to swap in an engine and tranny together and the appropriate electronics. Been done tons of time, so there is lots of information on how to do it. But even if you can do that kind of work, it is going to cost a fair amount of money and time. And not everyone craves a retromod truck.
