The easy tell tale is the coolant catch tank level dropping. The crust can be seen from the top, but it is hard… the bottom will eventually tell the tale, too. The pump should be covered under the power train warranty, I plan to do the same… or maybe just change it myself.

Mine isn't dropping, only have 30k miles, always the same level when hot. But for future reference what is the "should be concerned amount" in loss of fluid from the expansion tank? As they get more miles is some loss of fluid normal? If under warranty if you have pink crust and some fluid loss from the expansion tank, will the dealer give you any grief in doing a warranty replacement on the water pump? I think all 200 series owners would benefit from these answers. Thanks

Bought my '14 LC with 7k miles on 2-14. Now at 8k. Prior to the purchase, I didn't make it 150 miles before my BMW 650 coupe I bought broke down (twice) within 24 hours. This was my 4th BMW.

My bmw odyssey is chronicled on their forum, but I've never been happier to both give back a $94k lemon, and pick up a truck on 2-14 that I know I'm going to love for the long term. Feels in some ways like my 2000 Explorer I had in school that I put 135k miles on with $80 in unscheduled maintainence over that time. Truly a world class car I'd love to have back :)

When you have that moment... When your 24 hour old $94k bmw 650 misfires and breaks down on the interstate hours after purchase (never pushed over 3k rpm or abused) ... Making eye contact with the passenger as you both make the "oh s***" moment together, and again, repeating the event 24 hours after it was "fixed" by BMW, you easily take a deep appreciation for both beauty in simplicity and Toyota quality. I was looking at an LX before I pulled the trigger on the 650 (my dream car). After it all played out and I found the LC I ultimately picked up.

In the end.... Being in a spotless $94k BMW, anxiously awaiting a tow truck, is a pretty darn humbling experience and I thoroughly appreciate the quality the folks in Japan offer :)

As a southern football fan, I have immediately implemented football tailgates and drive-in movie parties as a result of my new purchase.

I think I'm going to like it

Well, any amount is really too much, as it is a no loss system. With that said, Toyota considers a little intermittent seepage normal. Any good dealer when presented with what you describe, will replace the pump under warranty. Toyota explains their procedure in their TSBs…. Lexus is L-SB-0091-11 and Toyota is T-SB-0117-11. You can read it here http://www.rav4world.com/tsb/2011/T-SB-0117-11.pdf They say the problem exists up to 2011 models, and the 200 and LX570 are not listed… but some 08 - 11 will have it.

So on the LX570 replacement of the water pump would be covered by the 6 year 70k mile warranty?? So if you do start to notice a leak from coolant disappearing or the formation of pink crusting, just have it replaced before the warranty expires. Can you see the pink crust without removing anything under the engine?

I top off the coolant to the "F" line so I have a point of reference on the expansion tank when the engine is cold and I check it every month or two. If it drops and inch below that line when the engine is cold within a month I would start looking for leaks. Since the wp was replaced, I've only put in about 1/4 cup of fluid in the past 10,000mi. I only stumbled upon this problem because I was changing the oil and noticed the pink streak.

At first, the dealer was stating that "it's normal" but I insisted that another shop said it was leaking with proof of pictures. My alternative back-up plan was to go to another Lexus dealer for the same complaint. Fortunately, for me there are 4 Lexus dealers around a 75mi radius :) Yes, the water pump is covered under power train. Warranty starts the day your vehicle was purchased by the original owner. You can find this date and past Lexus history using your VIN here: https://secure.drivers.lexus.com/lexusdrivers/my-lexus/home.do

For reference, this is what mine looked like. Pic 1) leaking water pump - view from top of engine bay. Pic) leaking water pump - view from bottom. Pic 3) valve cover gasket leak - view from driver side wheel well above the top of the tire.

I did a search on the Tundra Solutions site and there were no 2011 or newer 5.7's with water pump problems. Also none on Mud? So what did they change in 2011 forward?

FWIW, my '14 Tundra (5.7) with a whopping 16k miles on it has no leaks at all. None.

I noticed the coolant "disappearing" from my 2008 lc over the last couple oil changes so I had the dealer replace the water pump when I had it in to have them do a tranny flush. The mileage was 92K.

What's the damage on that bill ??$?
