has anyone here installed 5.29 gears in their 40? I have a 73 with a 2f and a 3 speed on 37s and i am getting ready to order my gears. I just dont want to go so low i cant drive on the highway. on the flip side i want to go as low as I can to make it more controlled off road.

I have 5:29's in my 40 and love them. I have a SBC with 35's and on the highway I can cruise 65 all day long. Off road they are fantistic! Low 4 will slowly crawl over anything. Go for it!!

I think I recall one of the elder members of this forum saying he won't install 5.29's in his customer's rigs, but that may have just been due to the grinding required to fit an ARB or something.

In retrospect, this post was worthless, sorry. :meh:

EDIT: Ok, I did my homework to try and add some value here. It seems you have to do a lot of grinding on the 5.29's if you have a semifloating axle, even with an open diff. I personally would be concerned about that, and it seems others are too:

Poser was the guy I was thinking of. Hes pretty wise about this stuff:
I will not set up 5.29 gear sets that will be used in a Land Cruiser semi-float axle.

With the Detroit, you will need to grind a lot of the teeth in order to get their center pin assembly into the carrier.

If it were me, I'd get me crawliness somewhere else.

Hi All:

With a 2F, J30 three-speed tranny, and 37 inch tires you should go with 4.88 ratio gears. If the rig is a trailer queen (i.e. never goes on the highway) the 5.29s will be O.K.

If you really want deeper gearing for off-road use switch to 4.88 axle gears then swap-in a SM420 four-speed tranny. The SM420 has a first gear ratio of 7.05 versus the 2.75 first of the TLC three-speed tranny your are currently running. The second gear on the SM420 will be closer to the first gear on your J30 tranny.

Regards,

Alan

My FJ40's specs are in my sig line...........and I'm running 4.88s. I'm really happy, both on and off road. Life's good!
