if anyone can shed some light it would be appreciated. i've got a 40 and am going to be running 529's with a full detriot in the rear. i was told the other day that with these gears i will need to grind the ring gear teeth to fit the carrier pin and[or] clearance the pin itself. has anyone been here before and will it work or grenade my rear end.

thanks

Personally I'd run 4.10's and get your low gearing elsewhere.. (much stronger)

Other than that, I can't help...

Hi all:

What size tires you gonna be running with this rig? Which engine?

Yes, to use 5.29 gears with the Detroit will require grinding-down the edge of two or three teeth on the ring gear to allow the pinion shaft to be installed or removed. Not a big deal at all.

Regards,

Alan

I will not set up 5.29 gear sets that will be used in a Land Cruiser semi-float axle.

With the Detroit, you will need to grind a lot of the teeth in order to get their center pin assembly into the carrier.

Im running 37 inch tires with 4.56 gears, I wish I had gone with 4.88s but with the 4.56 gears and a detroit I had to clearance the pin alot and it still is a trick to get the pin in and out.

for right now its got the inline 6 banger and 4 spd tranny. sounds like i got the same issue even if i go with 488's. might as well run the 529's

Please be sure to post up pictures of the teeth removed in order to get the cross shaft assembly into the Detroit with the 5.29 gear set.

Thanks.

I certainly am not going to tell you what to do, but since this is your first cruiser (https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/183467-hello.html#post2649763), I'd recommend you listen to some of the folks that have posted up above that are recommending against it. There are a lot of hardcore 40's out there but notice that very few are running the gear set you are talking about (there may be a reason for that ;) ).

after all this info, thanks by the way. what is the best ratio to run for install. i don't want a gearless wonder either. its pretty much between 488's or 529's

I would keep the stock gear ratios in the diffs and either get a crawler box (Orion, ToyBox), or a SM series tranny to go slow. The 2F has enough torque to turn 37s with stock gearing down the highway. Price out two gearsets, install kits, and labor and you will be close in price to a crawl box. The SM route is the cheapest of the options.
