I am going to regear and am trying to take the path that ETXLX450F said he took but I’m running into some roadblocks.

I originally messaged him last January to confirm he really did have 5.29’s in his UZJ100, and this was his response...

“Daily my IFS with 5.29s

Georg @ Valley Hybrids hooked me up.

You’ll Want to source a rear carrier assembly from an 80 series to make it work.

I found a used e-locker 3rd member here from a member in NC”

So I reached out to Georg ( @orangefj45 ) and this was his response back then...

“Yes we offer/sell ( and have been for years ) a 5.29 gear package for the 100-series IFS trucks, with or without rear e-lockers.
The components are from Sierra Gear here in northern CA. We've been dealing with them for 15-plus years. Great quality and reliability.
Since you have the locker, the kit runs $998 plus shipping. That includes both gear sets and both rebuild kits. Parts are readily available.”

So I thought I had it figured out but recently when trying to accomplish this with the help of ZUK @gearinstalls.com , ZUK indicated that speaking to Georg, Georg apologized for the miscommunication to me and thought I had a 97 80 series when he gave me that response last year!

ZUK has bent over backwards reaching out to @orangefj45 , Sierra Gear, West Coast Differentials, @just differentials , and @cruiseroutfit with a no-go at every turn.

So now I’m wondering if ETXLX450 didn’t actually know what gears he had and what George did was actually only 4.88’s or if no one knows how it was done?

ZUK did also say the problem is the 32 spline axles. He feels these are not worth giving up and going to 30 spline. I trust his opinion but just wanted to run it by anyone else for their input.

ETLX450 doesn’t seem to be on here anymore and may have sold his rig.

Anyone else know if this is possible with 32 spline axles before I resign myself to 4.88’s?

IYes we have done 100/470 rear diffs with the 80 R&P (4.56, 4.88, 5.29, etc) by using the OE Toyota e-locker OR the ARB Air Locker and conversion side gears for the 32 spline. Zuk asked via email and someone else did via a follow-up call with Bryce about doing so with a Harrop and my answer remains the same, we don't know as we've never tried it. I know Harrop simply uses modified Eaton Jeep app internals in their housing so it's quite possible they are simply broaching or EDM'img the original side gears to the 30/32 and the retrofit would be the same. I can tell you the side gears from a 100 e-locker will fit into the 80 e-locker carrier and the same for the 80/100 ARB Air Locker parts. This will achieve you the proper carrier offset for the ring gear and 32 spline side gears. As for giving up the 32 spline shafts, not only do you not have to, where would you find semi-float 30 spline shafts that fit the 100?

There are some old threads where we discussed this at length, around 2004? we used the 80 gears (which are really 4x/5x/6x/7x/8x 9.5" gears) in @Equipt UZJ100 years before Nitro was making a specific 100/200 rear gear set.

@MTKID curious what size tires you will be running that would require 5.29’s? 4.88’s are fine all the way up to 35’s and likely beyond. I wonder if regearing the transfer case would be easier?

37’s currently. 40’s being test fitted. I’m happy to do the transfer case gears too, but if I can get a little lower at the axles that would be my goal first.

Thank you Kurt! I couldn’t find any old threads of yours along those lines. Not sure if they still exist but I searched under your posts and @Equipt ’s searching just the 100’s section.

If we could use you to source as many of the parts, what would the parts list look like for the rear axle? I think we have the front axle figured out.

hmmmmm......I like that idea of "simply changing out" the 30 splines sidegears to 32 spliners....assuming just an internal broach was done. I would have to do a write-up on that one. :)

Now to see if I can get 32 spline sidegears from Cruiser brothers.....

Hmm, the conversations might have been on the LCML or the Wasatch Cruisers? Perhaps even on Pirate? We would love to help with the parts, assuming you go ARB Air Lockers we have everything needed in stock. With Harrop, while we stock the lockers themselves, we don't stock nor plan to stock repair parts such as the side gears needed. I don't have any 100 e-locker side gears available nor are they available new from Toyota. I have a couple of 100 Series e-lockers here at the shop missing side gears including the one from @Equipt

I would love to see a 100 series running 37’s! I’ve heard some talk about it but never seen it!

Good lord! What a beast. How is the handling off road? Did you do the SAS yourself?

Handeling is ok, I just recently replaced the front rear sway bars and dramatically improved. No I got it SAS done.

I have posted these already and my build thread is in my signature but...

I prefer slower crawling and love @LX470Beast ‘s rig, but would love to keep this as low as possible around these tires with additional cutting. And since a twin stick dual transfer case isn’t readily available I’d like to maximize the axle gearing first. I hope to get over to crawl in the Black Hills this summer and slow control might help minimize body damage.

I have those 80/100 ARB hybrid lockers running 80 series 4.88’s, installed since 2006. But I think @cruiseroutfit has most the answers for you already.

Awesome! I think we’re trying to go the route of Harrop currently, but that will be the second option at this point 👍

Hello all,

I sold my Tacoma recently and want to move on to building the LC100. I wanted to clear up this comment. My understanding is that I would keep my current diffs (LC100) and run a hybrid of 80/100 series parts with an ARB or E locker to run 5.29's. Is this just for the rear? Can we do the same thing for the front with an ARB?

I'm a big fan of the Harrop front locker. Has anyone tried with a HARROP front locker?

If you direct me to the right parts @cruiseroutfit I may just make this happen. If you know me, you'll know I'll commit to this.

Correct, hybrid parts for the rear to achieve 5.29. Non-issue for the front as 5.29’s are available without locker or carrier mods. So you can easily run ARB or the Eaton E-Locker in the front. I‘ve not tried swapping the Eaton internals on the rear at this point but we know if works with the ARB as mentioned above.

@cruiseroutfit, do you mind helping me to verify the part numbers I need? I just want to verify before purchase because the vehicle application does not list "1999+ Land Cruiser". I could not find any part numbers for those conversion side gears for the 32 spline. I'm still researching but this is what I came up with. I'm just pulling part numbers from random websites for reference. No bias here. I'll prob order through our sponsored vendors or my shop I use by my house.

I'm not too familiar but I'm also going through the process of picking out front diff parts. I'm pretty sure the front is not a clamshell design. I think you want this master install kit

MKTLC100-IFS Toyota 8" IFS Front Master Rebuild Kit

If anyone knows that I'm wrong please correct me

Oh, great catch. I didn't notice that.

I also noticed on Cruiser Teq | Land Cruiser Specialists Powered by Cruiser Outfitters - https://cruiserteq.com/ shows "2002 & Older 8x/100 require a 29 Spline Pinion Flange Kit. Please add PN35110 or PN35110TG to complete your order"

So another item to add to the list.
Just an FYI, Kurt runs a highly respected LC specialty shop and online store. I’m sure he would be happy to help a paying customer source every last bit and bob needed to complete the swap.
I am very aware of Kurt and his shop, will most likely just purchase a complete carrier from him. However, I and many DIY'ers can get parts through other means and if I can help verify part numbers this swap would be more common. I just happen to be on another site getting part numbers for reference. I wanted to add to this thread to help gather information to make it easier for others to do 5.29's. I read that the OP had to total his build and didn't finish this 5.29 swap, I wanted to pick up where he left off so we can all take the LC100 to the next level. I found a person on youtube that did 5.29's, he also stated, "It has a rear e locker carrier from an 80 series with the spider gears swapped from the 100 series carrier. ". He did say he went through Georg at Valley Hybrid but he didn't go into detail too much.

So... my current understanding is that I can't use my factory 100 series rear locker carrier. I believe I also have to source out an 80 rear e-locker carrier. Sounds like it is much easier to go with Arb in the rear. I really don't want to run any airlines.

Basically, this is what I want to do.
