Total noob question, but I need to know! I've only owned a AWD Subaru and 4WD Honda which are dumbproof.

Just picked up my first 4x4...89 Toyota PU & it didn't come with an owner's manual. Can someone give me a run down of how to operate the 4wd (2H, N, 4L, 4H)? Do you have to back up to disengage & all that...I seem to remember that from a friends truck many years ago?


If anyone knows where I can get a pdf of the owners manual that would be great.
 
Google-fu turned up something to referencing the instructions on the passenger side visor...I rushed downstairs & it wasn't there. It used to be from the looks of it...
 
does it have automatic hubs or manual hubs? as for the shifter that is pretty dumb proof leave in 2 high when driving on asphalt dry dirt ..... use 4 high on the road in the slippery snow ice or off road where more traction is needed..... and 4lo when doing steep hill climbs climbing over the Subaru or Honda , rocks and such and when you need a little more oomph.
 
Manual hubs...do you have to back up to disengage it or is that only if it doesn't disengage.

What is the Neutral spot for?

Do you have to shop to shift it into 4H or from 4H to 2H? I figure you need to stop to put it in 4L.

You don't need to back up to disengage 4WD. The TC can bind up a bit and it can be hard to shift into 2WD. Backing up can help. Driving forward can help. Unlocking the hubs will help.

In theory you don't need to stop to shift from 2WD to 4H, but I would. If you have manual hubs you will need to stop and get out anyways. With auto-hubs or ADD you can shift "on the fly." You can also lock the hubs and shift on the fly ... but my trucks have never liked it. Stop, then shift.

When shifting from 4H to 4L STOP, then shift.

Don't worry about neutral on the TC.
