Sorry that this is so late, but while Rory and I were working on his truck today, we put together a little wheeling/camping trip for next week if anyone does not already have plans and wants to come along.

Leaveing Tuesday afternoon and heading down to Elephant Butte for some water-front camping, then to the VLA via back roads the next day (Weds.). Probably doing Water Canyon and camping up there Weds. night. Thursday AM, we'll be going into town (Magdelena) for some chow and then some more off road heading north and then coming back Friday mid-AM. So basically, Tuesday through Friday AM.

Not sure of the itinerary really--any suggestions, GPS coordinates, etc. anyone might want to recommend?

Let us know if you are interested.

Cheers.

I might be up for this one....let me ask the boss!

This would have been nice to know earier, because ou company has a lake house down at the Butte. Shore side if the lake has gone up. I know it takes away from the camping side but alway nice to have a shower and well you know the rest.

Anyone come up with some waypoints/ideas/etc?

Rory and I had thrown around the idea of Elephant Butte first, then up towards the VLA/Magdalena area through the mountains west of I-25 and then back.

Open for ideas indeed. Though the VLA must be on the list for me as I've wanted to see that for many moons.

Also thinking of camping up Water Canyon (I guess it's a good wheeling trip up to the top).

Anyway, you have GPS Ali--set something up brother!

Water Canyon is not wheeling. They have been doing some expansion at the top for the military and the road was recently graded to allow for very large trucks. There is some light wheeling near by. Six Mile Canyon, and South Canyon come to mind. Probably won't even need to turn the hubs ... oh wait, you drive an 80. :flipoff2:

Six Mile ends at a box and a hiking trail takes off from there. Real scenic canyon. South Canyon also has a trail at the end, but I thought it was boring. Jordan Canyon has a road that takes you to the top of North Baldy. It gave some stock rigs trouble a while back due to loose rock. Very scenic.

Dark Canyon, which takes off at the Water Canyon campground is now gated. At least it was the last time I was there. It also went to the top of North Baldy, but Greg and Steve don't like the exposure. There was a cabin just before climbing up the slope to the top. It's probably my favorite canyon in the Mags. Too bad they closed it.

FINALLY, Onur won't get body damage on a trail :flipoff2::flipoff2: On second thought, he'll probably find the only piece of rock on the road and have it smack his vehicle some how.

I might throw a couple rocks at him to make him feel better :D

Jon, do you have any GPS routes for that area? Maybe you can send them to Ali?

Been helluva week already and I need to escape town.....

Just got home from work, CB install is finished, tools and extra parts are packed.

Dog is ready (when's he not ready).

Tomorrow, water, food and beer then hit the road!

:grinpimp:

See you guys in the AM. Ali--make sure you call. I'll be at Rory's helping him with some final tuning of his rig.

Trip report is here:

Great time and some really good wheeling/off-roading.

I don't know how many of the HDC guys have spent some time in the San Mateo mountains near Magdelena, but we could have spent days there with great camp grounds, good forest roads (read: tough) and cool weather for the summer.

All in all, it was a great time Ali and Rory. We gotta do another run again soon...

Cheers.
