I never knew they had a 4 th gear indicator switch, but I didn't spend much time with one to remember. SOR.com might be a good place to look and see. Timmyisinthewell might be able to supply a part#.

Yes,I'm doing a restoration and trying to hook up all the emissions, it's confusing. TOP switch makes sense since there is a listing for that in the wiring diagram. I checked SOR. nothing there, I will try some of the other sources mentioned. Thanks for the responses.

I see a "top switch" on my Haynes wiring diagram for '77. However, I find no reference to the same on my original Toyota microfiche set, in the switch and relay section. My microfiche set covers the period from 03/69 to 07/80 for the FJ40 series and the FJ55 in the US and Canadian markets. Could it have been called something else? I sold my brand new off the showroom floor '76 FJ40 in '78, so at my age I have absolutely no recollection of a "4th gear indicator switch.

It is a mystery. Other than a few references here and there no one seems to know about it. I have the switch on my transmission but it is too mangled to get a good picture of it, it is just an oil plug at this point.

At the risk of sounding like a dope, could that be your back up light switch?
Prior to 8/80, the start of the split transfer case the reverse light switch threaded into the back of top cover. The switch prior to 8/80 that threaded into the top is 84220-12010 SENSOR ASSY, SHIFT POINT. If a picture of this switch is needed I have a loose four speed with the switch.

IIRC, the last time I sold one of those switches, the customer said that the wire broke off while he was installing it. It’s a 47YO electrical part.

I think the customer said he cut through the epoxy until he could get to the terminal, soldered the wire back on, and put some new epoxy on it to seal the joint.

The 4 speed in my 78 had 2 switches and the manual only showed 1. I had no idea why it had 2.

Thanks, I think I will try that, do you know if just one wire is on the switch? I have a small piece of one (wire) sticking out of the epoxy but it doesn't show continuity if I push the button on the bottom of the switch in. I will have to tear the whole switch apart.

here it is

Just one wire.

Here is the 78 transmission I pulled from a 71 I parted out thirty years ago.

I find it interesting the cover has the boss on where the reverse light switch is used with a split transfer case.

Thanks! It looks like 2 wires coming out which would explain why the one wire I have does not ground when the switch activates. The switch must ground the wire I'm missing...Right?

Second picture is of a H41 out of a 84 HJ47RV from Australia. The switch on top is a reverse light switch..it moved from the back to the top to clear the split transfer case. Thought it was interesting the early four speed cover for the 40 series (cast iron versus aluminum) has the boss the could be drilled and tapped for the reverse light. That could come in handy if installing a 60 seriss four speed into a 40 series. Keeps the transmission shifter in the same location.
