i am in college and have the top off of my 4runner and i was wondering what i can do to keep someone from starting and stealing my truck while i have the top off and am in my classes this summer. i was thinking maybe removing the rotor button or something??? any help is appreciated please reply

A couple of little things to deter joy riders... install a shift knob (if it has a manual tranny) that shows reverse in the wrong position, say to the left and down, like an FJ40... Then park nose in. You'd be amazed how many people will continually attempt to place it in a gear that is not there. Place the driver's seat all the way back, many folks are less likely to mess with a big guy.

Best thing I did for my 86 4r was to buy a new ignition lock from Cdan. About $80 and probably the best money I've ever spent.

The older Toyotas can be started with just about anyones old Toyota key and the car thieves in N.Cali seem to know this. If you hang out at Pirates for long you hear about all sorts of mini-trucks and 4r's being stolen. And on most of the ones that I have heard about that were recovered showed no damage to the ignition lock.

I had two old 4r's (86 & 87) and I could start them with any similiar key, even an Isuzu key. Find a friend with a mid 80's Toyota key and try it.

The new lock from Cdan is a totally different blank, the old keys won't even fit. Of course you have the old key for the doors (and on my 4r the door locks will open to any old Toy key also, but I didn't replace those) unless you buy new door locks as well.

i always thot it would be good to have propane nosles wired up so when the ignition was started by someone who didnt first flip a propane kill switch,
they would kick on and ignite right in the face of a theif.

but but since the probability of having the truck catch in fire too, i havent installed this kind of anti theft.

also would be nice if you could plug in the truck to a AC outlet, while parked at your house. the AC would run through the metal of the doors and shock the snot out of any potential thieves.

a good gun and lots of ammo and a mean reputaion:flipoff2: .and yea the dog was a good idea.but man dont get a big dog get one of those mean little bastards:D

There is a thread in the 40 section about this exact same issue. It was a very long thread and there were many clever ideas. The easiest, as stated above, is to wire a kill switch to an ignition system funtion. A coil kill switch is excellent. It just will not start and that is deterence in my opinion.

unplug the small wire going to the starter, signal wire or what ever you want to call it or put in a kill switch in between that wire and starter

this can be done using the 12V system on your truck. just get a Model-T Coil, run the leads from that across the seat. when the perp sits in the seat, he/she gets the tail shocked out of them.

just make sure you don't leave it for too long, or park on a hill, cause it tends to kill your battery ;)

That is a hell of an idea..BUT the boy is in college...which means lots of parties (hopefully) and I can just see a post party drive and forgetting to turn off that seat warmer ( :

Weld a chain link to the gear shift lever, and a chain to the bottom of the seat.

When you park the truck, back it up against a wall, put the truck in reverse, and put a padlock on the gear shifter chain link inline with the chain that is tight.

This effectivly locks the truck into reverse.

Simple, cheap, effective.

One of the forums mentioned unplugging the clutch interlock connector on the clutch pedal frame. By doing this, you HAVE to press the 'clutch lock cancel' switch on the dashboard to start the truck. Free, simple, and would slow down anyone but a Toyota-theft pro.
