I saw an older maybe late 80's 4 runner picking up a girl from bandpractice today and after looking at it for awhile i got to thinking. would the swingout tire carrier on the 4runner work on an FJ60? Just a thought if anyone has pondered it before or has actually done it. I think it might work, but i'd have to actually dry fit it before i knew for sure.

I think CruiserDan's advice to me when inquiring about a similar set up for my 80 would apply here.

You can bolt the exterior piece on, fab probably required. But the stock units have welded-in supports inside the sheetmetal that will be hard to fab......and are required to support the weight.

Just a thought.

before I built my rear bumper with tire rack was thinking of doing the same thing but using a gate off a Ford Bronco onto my landcruiser. I asked a friend of mine about it and he said the same thing (he owns a large auto body shop). it would litterally tear out through the sheet metal if you dont totally reinforce things on the inside....but it can be done.

FYI, the factory tire carrier used on the 4Runners was used in 1990 and 91 only IIRC.
