What will happen if I install my new 4 runner calipers (s13wb - the big ones) and I don't do the master. I have limited time this weekend so I thought that I can do the calipers first. I also have a new set of short brake lines the DOT ones from MAF, that I will do at the same time. I need the brakes to be in good working order for the comming week.

So good idea or bad idea? The MC is a 1" from a 4 runner Not the aluminium one but the cast iron one.

You will have very long pedal travel. Prolly not safe to drive.

I would say, that if youre using a 4runner MC and swapping in 4 runner calipers up front, you would have almost the same setup as a stock 4runner. I would say that a 1 inch MC would be adequate for 4 runner calipers, in fact it seems a lot of people on here are fine with them running the stock MC so youd be fine.

Done it a few times. No problems.

I swapped in the 4 runner calipers without changing the master cylinder on my '85 FJ60. No problem. There is not excessive peddle travel. Just my experience. Others might say different.

I have stock brakes, so no personal experience with the 4 Runner swap. However I've got pretty good reading comprehension, and from the multitude of posts regarding this mod, there seem to be four scenarios:

A: Swapped 4 runner calipers only, kept stock master, and have long pedal travel.
B: Swapped 4 runner calipers only, kept stock master and works great.
C: Swapped 4 runner calipers + 1" bore master, and works great.
D: Swapped 4 runner calipers + 1" bore master, and have long pedal travel.

There are variables not accounted for in the above:
1. Different sources for calipers (OEM, aftermarket, different years, new or reman, etc)
2. Same for master, but also could come from different model trucks (4 Runner, FJ80, non-abs FZJ80, etc)
3. Skill/experience of installer (esp in bleeding I suppose).

I'd really like to do this mod. Seems pretty easy, not too expensive, with potential for significant benefit. However I'm puzzled by the different outcomes people are experiencing.

Any suggestions as to how to make this mod come out right everytime?

I finally got my setup working perfect, it took me a long ass time to get everything squared away. I kept finding things i had to replace or fix like leaky wheel cylinders, shoes were shot, had to put a residual valve in, so pretty much once everything was new all i had to do was bleed it a couple times and its solid as a rock now. Ive noticed on my rig that no matter how much time i put into bleeding the brakes after i crack open the system, its always a lot better after i rebleed a couple days later. This was my first time working with my brakes, so once i got a feel for everything and what works and what doesnt, it just took time to get everything perfect.

Trim the backing plate, install the 4Runner calipers, adjust the rear brakes up properly, bleed the whole system, starting with the LSPV, then the front, then the rear, and be done with it.

Long pedal travel is a result of the rear drum brakes not being adjusted properly, period.

Good luck!

It's done! Very easy swap! I had enough time to do the calipers and master. Minimal triming on backing plates. And I did a one man vaccume bleed, and they work great. I may need to put in a residual pressure valve as the 4runner master did not have one, and the propotioning valve seems to only have one for the front brakes. I don't have a LSPV since it's an '82 V8J60. I will drive it for a few days and the assess the need for the residual pressure valve. Thanks for all the input.
