Fawk thats a big motor

are you going to build it at all? What year is the motor?

The motor is a 76. I don't really have any intentions of building it up right now. Stock its supposed to have 270 HP and like 380 ft lbs of torque which is already a big improvement over the 2f. I really am not fond of carbs (none of my cars except the fj60 have had one) and I don't want to have to mess with it after throwing a different cam in there or doing anything else to it. The motor is running good now so why mess with it? Also I don't really know too much about the history of the motor. For all I know I could get it in there and a piston will go. I plan on just getting the swap done for now. I would like to set up injection later on down the road, probably tbi just because its pretty simple. But then I'd want a different tranny. Money right now has been playing a big role because we've gotten close to closing down the business and I still need money for the mortgage. I dont really feel comfortable spending a lot right now (doesn't really go hand in hand with an engine swap). Ill get it in well see what happens from there.

race ya...

Just an update, I got the 1 ton rear axle off the truck today. I also picked up an np205 transfer case, another turbo 400 and a front driveshaft for 200 bucks off craigslist. The transmission doesn't have a torque converter, but it looks to be in a lot better condition than the 400 I have. The guy said its a good tranny and that he had to use the torque converter as a core or something I don't know. The good thing is that its already set up to mount up to the transfer case, where mine was not, I was going to have to switch output shafts. I also got the oil pan off and started replacing the rear main on the engine. As soon as the tow truck comes to haul off this piece of crap donor truck out of my driveway (now that I have stripped everything off it) I'll get the 2f out of the landcruiser and find somebody to take that off my hands.

I also got the motor on the stand finally so that I can start going through it and resealing everything. Mind you this picture is AFTER pressure washing the motor for about an hour. I still have a lot of cleaning to do before I can reseal and repaint. Now that I have the motor on the stand I can clean up the mess I made and continue on with the project.

Advanced Adapter engine mounts came to via fedex so I'm looking pretty good schedule wise

mine was a bit tight but it fits.... although I am going to do some more adjustments with my BFH to make it fit better. :)

You put it in already? Holy crap.

Hey brokenparts, does it look like its going to fit? I saw in your thread your gonna trim your firewall? Why is that?

the heads just barely graze the firewall. Under a load I think it could turn into a bigger problem. I'd rather clearance it than having the motor "self" clearance the firewall.

How far forward did you mount yours?

I'd be happy to give you some general measurements tonight when I get home. Anything specific?

Well what are you using to mount your motor? I'm just using advanced adapters mounts. You said your head just barely grazes the firewall. Do you have your motor moved as far forward as it could go? That brings up another question, what radiator do you plan on using. I'm just gonna fab up some sort of bracket to make the Chevy radiator work because it has the tranny cooler built in.

No, I certainly could move it foward a bit but that would mean redoing my motor mounts, tranny mounts, etc, etc..... Now if the motor really starts to interfere with the three link then I might move it. I'd rather just whack the firewall with a BFH a bit rather than re-invent the wheel at this point. I'm not building a beauty queen. I'm going to try to use the same radiator that I used with my sbc since going with a bigger radiator would mean relocating the batteries.

Yeah I measured the chevy radiator the other day and its a good foot wider than the stock 60 radiator, so it'll be a squeeze. Like you said, the battery will have to be relocated too, and I'll probably cut some holes on the outer sides of the stock radiator mount just so that it can breath more with the plasma cutter, but that shouldn't be a big deal all things considered. Right now the other thing I'm starting to contemplate is hooking up the a/c seeing as how summer is pretty much here in AZ. I'll mess with that after I get the motor in. Right now I plan on getting the engine all cleaned up, resealed and painted over the weekend. Then next week I should be able to pull the 2f out and start hooking up the 454. The only thing I still need is a shifter and a throttle cable. Nothing serious.

Another thing I don't know what I want to do about is the valve covers. I don't know if I want to just repaint mine or spend 50 bucks and get some cheap chrome ones. Maybe I'll go to the mexican hot rod shop they had some in there the other day.

I was planning on working on the motor all weekend but ended up taking an impromptu trip up to utah for the weekend with the wife. So tonight I worked on it some more, got some more stuff off the motor and started cleaning the whole thing up to repaint it all. I got the oil pan completely stripped and repainted too.
