Some of you may have seen this already, but I just found it tonight. In Venezuela, they sell new Land cruisers with 4.5 with an option of manual transmission :D

I don't know the currency there compared to the US dollar. When I find-out, I'm flying down there, buying one and driving it back home. (In my dreams). I'm not sure if they cen even be imported here. There's got to be a way!!

Joshua,
Not trying to squash your dreams early in the thread but this information is not new and several have had the fantasy of bringing one in. Do an archive search on "Venezuela" on SOR and in the 80s section here on ih8mud. You'll want to do an Advanced search and increase the number of days to 300 and up the returned threads counter.

In summary, legally acquiring a Venezuelan FZJ80 can be done but it is not cheap and not easy. You cannot simply buy one down there and drive it unnoticed across the border... and if you try, there are substantial smuggling laws that you would be violating.

If you have the tenacity and the money then at least one of those archive posts by me has the email address and phone numbers of a guy/Company (?) that will do the importing... about $65k a couple of years ago IIRC. They can also get you used ones.

wonder where these are made?
Odd that they would keep making an older model that has been superseded (?) by the 100...
Generally car companies don't do that. Kinda blows usual production economy theories out of the water... I guess that the 80 is still considered "good enough" from a technical point of view. Either that or the 100 is just too expensive to sell in most places?

Eric,
Read the archive thread... it's here on ih8mud (July '03) and all is explained.

Thanks Beowulf!! It was fun while it lasted, (the dream)! What about a diesel 100 series from Austrailia with manual trans and solid front axle? I've got relatives there!! Ah, a boy and his dreams!!

joshua, it's not a totally dead idea. The venezuelan currency has dropped by a huge amount since that $65k number was used so it may be feasible if you are patient.

Also based on this website, http://www.autoindex.org/bodies.plt?no=1505&ass=
the trucks are actually built in columbia. I doubt they live up to Araco standards but people brought in the banderant 40's from Brazil so why not?

There was a recent thread indicating 80's are being built under licence in China too.

I saw one of the 99 Models from Venezuela at Cruise Moab 2000. What was really strange is the 70 series with them came with Dana axles in the rear. I was told that they had to have a certain number of parts manufactured in Venezuela for them to be considered not imports, and Dana has a plant there. I was thinking the Autana was actually made in Venezuela. I could have remembered that wrong though. Also, 99 was the first year their 80 series had fuel injection. Prior to that they had carbs. I have a photo somewhere of a 1FZ with a carb on it. They didn't build diesels in Venezuela.

For LHD diesels folks should be looking at Iceland. I have a friend who looked into importing a LHD diesel. He found that Iceland was about the best place. Heavy taxes make used ones available. His reasoning may have had more to do with shipping though. He had military affiliation and there is a base there.

What about a diesel 100 series from Austrailia with manual trans and solid front axle?
The 100 Series is'nt availible with a front Live Axle and the Naturaly Aspirated Diesel is only availible in the 105 Series. :flipoff2:

Now if only I had $50,000 I could chose from a Poverty Pack HZJ105 or a HZJ78 or HZJ79 with High Country Pack. :'(

Jonathan,

Here's a link to the Australian 100 series 5spd 4.2 diesel with rigid front axle, manual hubs, and optional FR & RR lockers!!

Dude, that's the HZJ-105. I imagine it's about as "powerful" as a 60-series's 2F, on a 100-series body. I can't begin to think how slow that slug would be here in the USA, specially up in the 4,000+ ft. mountain passes, and even just considering merging into the freeways of Los Angles? Yikes. Or, let's put it this way: loaded with bullbars, steel bumpers, two fuel tanks, sliders, and passengers, I don't think it'll be able to climb up Five Fingers or Truck Hill in Hollister Hills.

You just described my 92 FJ80 without bullbars, sliders and dual tanks!!! I don't even try to merge on the freeway, and talk about slugging up hills!! . We like to take Hwy 88 to my parents vacation house is up in Genoa, NV. (after Minden and Gardnerville)because it's an awesome drive, but up hills my LC is a dog. It will go up 5 fingers, and truck hill, (now that's it's been graded), but I could get out and walk faster!! It definately can climb with it's torquey 4.0. I'm curious to see how it does in Pismo next weekend. I don't see myself flying up Competition Hill like I used to in my Tacoma!! I used to hit 5th gear up at the top!!
