was on my way home from oakland airport sittin on 580 east at hoppyard in stopped traffic, got plowed into from behind hard enought to knock down sun visors and knock the ash tray completly out onto the floor, i got out onto the #2 lane of the freeway expecting to see my back end crunched in, but all i saw was a little chunk of plastic ripped off the bumper cover and one mangled kia rio, his whole front bumper was off, hood was crunched, and both passengers slamed thier knees into thier dash. he said he was going 20 mph, went for the brake and hit the gas instead:rolleyes:, i love my 80:D

I'd pull the "bumper" and make sure no damage was done to the cross member just in case. But nice to know that a stock bumper will ward off the wayward Kias :)

and when they say the crossmember is tweaked and the bumper is toast, get a slee, kaymar, etc.........

there could be somthing wrong with the crossmember and the bumper? can i replace those with aftermarket if it is "tweaked", and are there any of you who own a body shop in modesto area?;)

Yes, there could be something wrong with your crossmember, and other parts of your frame (the metal part of your bumper is, in fact, the rearmost frame crossmember). Your truck was struck by another vehicle, and absorbed some of that shock. It did something with it, and damage is a possibility.

Under the plastic "bumper" center section on the LX is the crossmember, part of the frame. Yes it can get dented and the plastic will pop back out looking good. The best way to tell is to pull the Tupperware off and look.

This is what it looks like without the tupperware.

If you install a 4x4 Labs bumper, this is what is cut off.

This is how it looks before installing the bumper.

Were you wearin protection (tow reciever)?

That area sucks for traffic, sorry to hear about the collision.

yeah, i do have the tow reciever, i didnt even think about that, i bet that took the brunt of the impact, if thats the case, am i still lookin at possible frame damage?

I like the odds better with the reciever, that thing is pretty beefy and gives added support.
You are still gonna want to get it checked.
If it was a dead on hit, the X member might be a little tweeked but the frame rails should be ok.
If it was truly 20 mph dead on w/ kia , your prolly not too bad.

the other guys insurance came to investigate the damage yesterday, a couple of scrapes in the center rubber cover, and a couple of scrapes in the passenger side of the bumper....cut me a check for 716 dollars:D:beer:

That $ is good for a rear bumper, but when they checked it out, did they remove the plastic bumper cover and inspect for damage underneath? Without doing that, they may have missed the most expensive damage. If they haven't looked at this, make sure they do.

Take to your auto body and have them check it. Don't cash the check yet as that is admission that everything else is ok. I think that's how it still works...

he did mention that, if there is the body shop would let me know, he did crawl underneath and said it looked ok and that the tow reciever had'nt shifted.

Don't fully sign off on things yet. Since I am going to the chiropractor right now for a little fender bender that I caused it can take a week or months for back pain to show up. So go get x-rays because when that back pain hits OUCH it HURTS..... Insurance companies know this and they try to get you sign off on injuries right away.
