so after an 11 hour drive home, open the garage and see my FJ-40 finally. got delivered monday, i just got home from school so definitely made my night looking at the beauty (pics tomorrow). i was digging thru the glove box and found papers from back in 1978 and alot of other cool stuff from way back when. but anyways this is my first 40, so will have TONS of questions, heres a few to start.

1) are the rear after the doors supposed to turn in a little bit?
2) has 76 front axle w/ disc but still needs everything else, can someone point me to the right direction on the parts i need to get
3) also need to know where to order rear brake lines (drum)
4) has a newer steering column, i think the PO said from a 80 series not 100% sure, but need to figure out how to wire ignition, any diagrams to use
5) is crossover steering and hy-steer the same thing? i was gonna use luke at 4x4 labs for my steering to complete the steering (rig is SOA'd)
6) what kind of shop can lengthen drive shafts? i heard it should be about $300 for front and rear
7)i searched and couldn't find, what lug pattern do i need? and i need a wheel with about 2 1/2" back spacing i think i read
8) any other helpful things you can suggest, i have been reading the FAQs alot.
9) both hood latches are undone, but hood won't open. is there a latch? it was just to dark to see anything

Before you buy anything, do some more reading.

The Body does Taper After the doors.

2) has 76 front axle w/ disc but still needs everything else, can someone point me to the right direction on the parts i need to get.
What parts do you need? You should have the 4 speed. You should get a T-Case Save from Poser or OrangeFJ45.

3) also need to know where to order rear brake lines (drum)
Make you own.

4) has a newer steering column, i think the PO said from a 80 series not 100% sure, but need to figure out how to wire ignition, any diagrams to use. Need picture of that.

5) is crossover steering and hy-steer the same thing? i was gonna use luke at 4x4 labs for my steering to complete the steering (rig is SOA'd) 4x4Labs stuff is what I run.

6) what kind of shop can lengthen drive shafts? Any Driveshaft Shop. The tubing is an odd size so they may have to order it.

i heard it should be about $300 for front and rear.
Since you are SOA you will need a Long Travel front driveshaft made.

7)i searched and couldn't find, what lug pattern do i need? Chevy 1/2 ton bolt patern.

and i need a wheel with about 2 1/2" back spacing i think i read. I think you will be looking at 3 1/2" backspacking but I would wait until you have the highsteer arms on first before you buy new wheels.

8) any other helpful things you can suggest, i have been reading the FAQs alot. Start with the end in mind. What do you want this rig to do for you? DD? or TrailBoss?
9) both hood latches are undone, but hood won't open. is there a latch? it was just to dark to see anything.
Latch is under the bezel by the driverside headlight

couldn't sleep last night so went and looked at the fj and figured out how to open the hood. had to go up under the fender well and pop it lose.
what i meant about the 76 front axle, it has the brakes/rotors, but i need the master cylinder and line and all that. all i need is the master cylinder for them and brake line right? also found repair papers from january 1976, and the vehicle was driven daily up until 2003 according to all the papers. have the original manuals to (a little water damage tho)

the goal for the end is a trail rig, but drive able to drive it on the road as well. is CCOT the best place to order new keys/door locks from? don't have any keys for it that i know of, calling the PO later to let him know i recieved the vehicle from shipping and see if he has them or no.

is this manual the best one? or is their another recommended one?

Take pictures of the driver's side of you engine bay. You should have a brake booster in the equation also

Are you going to do the Rear disk brake conversion? I would recommend it and go ahead and buy the right Master cylinder for that. If now or later you replace wheel cylinders on the drums you will pay almost or more than a Rear disk brake conversion if you do it yourself.

Where are you located? Try to get envoled with some local land cruiser guys.

right now, no i am wanting to just get the thing running, and i have a bit of work to do, and not that much money. if the rear drums are already shot, then thats a possibility but if their still good ill use them til they need replacing then start thinking rear disc brake conversion

can you give me a link or part number i think for the front brakes master cylinder?

Your SOA, what size tires are you going to run?

SOR.com has alot of stuff that you can't find other places, Toyota dealers still sell alot of parts for these things, they may have to get them shipped in but i've had some good luck with them.

Specter Off-Road-Land Cruiser Parts - Page 014-Brake Master Cylinder, Booster & Pedal

I use the haynes manual some. There is a electronic copy of a 1980 Factory service manual body & Chassis, I think it was at a birfield.com or something like that.

35s for the time being.

i was just looking at the motor to tranny and how it was set up, i think it was a crappy job who ever did it. can someone post pictures of what there engine to transmission plate looks like mounted on the rig. i can see my flywheel and see about 6" of a gasket where something is supposed to go there. ill get pics up in a bit and all i am thinking is thats a quick way to destroy stuff going down a trail.

i was thinking pull the engine/tranny/transfer case and get them cleaned up, and while the engine bay is empty get that cleaned up, get everything put back together CORRECTLY

motor mounts look correct from the picture on their website, but the diagram they have it shows its not... ill get more pics up in a bit

$250.

What year is your 40? I would have to advise getting a FJ80 master cylinder right off the bat. It will prevent a lot of headaches if you switch to rear disk brakes. If you already have a booster, the FJ80 MC will bolt right on, the 4 bolt pattern is the same.

He wants to go the cheap route. I tried to tell him.

If he got that MC wouldn't it be bad to still keep the drums in the rear? You won't have a check valve for the rear.

when i popped the hood finally, the PO had a master cylinder put in already so no need to replace it unless it doesn't work.

its a 1975 fj40 with a chevy 350. ill get a full pic up in a bit.

can someone varify that i need an advanced adapter for the engine to transmission?

heres some from the PO. its in the garage with stuff all around it, if i roll it out later today ill get some photo's.

you can see the master cylinder in the photo

nice truck. if the pedal is hard to push its probably your booster. they make a kit to swap it to chevy easy install. you get a booster and master. I could tell a big diff. in stopping power.
