I am picking up new winch tomorrow an picked up a winch plate from Jim. Now I think its time I get a respectable bumper, not the cut down kangaroo krusher thats currently on my rig. I was thinking of picking up a piece of 2x4 box steel 1/4" thick. While my 110 wire feed welder is supposed to do 1/4" I don't trust it or my welding skills enough. I am sure that I can talk someone into welding it for me.

Then I get to thinking that maybe others in the club would want a new bumper. Correct me if I am wrong but steel usually come in sticks of 21'? Would anyone be up for a fab day to make some 40 bumpers? Would there be a YT memeber willing to do the welding? If not no big deal I'm sure I can find about 5 foot of srap to build it. Just thought it would be a good excuse for a gathering too.

Edit: I have a grinder and a set of torches. No 220v in my garage though.

You are correct, steel typically comes in 21' lengths. Unless you're really going to beat on it, think about going to 3/16" save you a little money and weight.

Do you have your truck back? Wasn't Wally doing some work to it?

I was thinking about that. I want to mount tabs for shackles. I doubt that it will really get beat but I would rather build it once than twice. I am open to what others want to do if they are interested. I could pick up the steel for it.

Truck is still up at Wally's. I'm hoping to get it back in the next month. Having a factory looking bed built but he is bobbed to where the frame rests.

I have to stop by one of these days to pick up those parts from you. My mig welder is broken and probably heading for the dump, but I have a dual voltage arc welder that you can try out. It has a 220V plug on it right now, but I have an extension cord. It can plug into your dryer outlet.

Yeah I know and I have to pull the parts too. :D

Thanks for the offer on the ARC welder. I was given an old 220v ARC welder that I need to get a plug for but it does have an unusually long cord. I was going to run 220v to the garage at some point. Unfortunately our dryer is 110v because its gas. Our oven is 220v and maybe that could work for the day but I have no experience using this welder. Although I am getting better with my 110v wire feed. Less and less boogers :hillbilly:

saw your truck at the farm- NICE RIG.

He just finished up a stake bed on a T-100- pocket sides, wood deck, recessed lights. Slick as hell. If yours comes out that nice, you will be quite happy.

Thanks. I am sure that he will do a great job. I have seen the work that he does on tubs. I guess he is thinking of this as a prototype.

Oh cool he finished it. When I was there he just finished doing the mech work (I threw in the battery) :D and they were talking about the new bed.

Mike and I also got the 45 running and outa the ice/driveway area and over to the shop, drove like an old lady as to not take out a barn on the ice

Re-think the 1/4in idea for your bumper, they are WAY too heavy, I did mine 1/4 to start and wish I hadnt. lost of wasted tube after I cut it all off. Stick with 3/16 and a bunch of gussetts. better and stronger in the long run.

If you're concerned about how the tabs for shackles will get mounted, knife them through the tube so you can weld inside & out.

Just for comparison, I pulled out my steel manual.

2x4x1/4" tube = 8.8# per foot

2x4x3/16" tube = 6.8# per foot.

2 pounds per foot lighter.

Alright, you guys have me sold on the 3/16. Does anyone know where to get shackle tabs which will go trough the bumper?

Here's mine. I got it from a fellow Mudder and did some work to it. The gussets are welded on.

Build a bumper day! Sounds like a good Holiday to me.

LD thats exactly like the bumper I had told you that I have. If you would like it (or anybody else) PM me I am cleaning house.

I forgot the other possible option. You could use C4x5.4 channel as well. Easier to work on the back side because it's open and only weighs 5.4lbs per foot (steel manual again). 4" tall x 1-5/8" deep. Web is 3/16" thick, but the flanges average 5/16" thick.

But it'll have a hard corner top & bottom as opposed to the rounded over edges of a piece of tube.

I thought about it too but I don't really like the harder corner. I thought about rounding out the corners with a flap disk but I doubt that I would be that accurate with it and it would look ghetto fab.

Use a router with a 1/4 rounding bit..... :hillbilly:

BTW where are you guys in Pawtucket again? We just looked at a house near the Seekonk line off Daggett Ave.
