In 1972 I obtained from the local Toyota dealer in Renton WA a 4-speed transmission that I installed in my '64 FJ40 that I had a Chev v8 installed. It has a 5.299 1st gear ratio. My search, so far, has not turned up any useful information for this tranny. I sure would like to know more about it!

in 1972? Seems early but my guess it may have been an H41 transmission.

If you look at a Haynes manual you notice it list a four speed just called for F engine. Specs are 5.299:1 first gear. Years ago I was working on trading a Fairey Overdrive for one. As I remember it was in Costa Rica. Shipping was just too complicated. Believe these all have 10 spline output shafts.

Just a little searching found a listing for an early H41 back to 10/71 for the FJ45 in the Asia/Middle East market.

The tub changed on the FJ40 9/72. Was a 73 model but still in 1972. Have the right parts a four speed is a complete bolt in upgrade. Prior to 1/79 the torque tube behind the transfer case is further back in the FJ45/HJ45 than the FJ40. On the pickup model the transmission cover is also shaped different. Those two things probably made adding a four easier in the LWB verses the SWB FJ40 prior to 9/72.

The 5:29 was actually listed as OPT in 1969 microfiche. I have come across 3 total in 34 years. As LITP indicated, they had 10 spline tailshafts.

Something that might interest you. About a decade ago I visited MAF in Simi Valley and they had over 20 rebuild kits for THAT H41, more than ANYONE could sell in a lifetime. Perhaps the new owners in NV have some of those kits.

What is the 1st gear ratio in the regular H41? So was it called an H40 this 5:29?

4.99 to 1.
