My 70' FJ was fitted with a 1972 F engine and 1978 4 speed trans. The receipts given to me by the previous owner do not indicate the transfer case was replaced. What is the shift pattern for this transfer case? What exactly is the process for engaging 4wd? I know to lock the hubs, and there is a front drive lever you have to pull before you shift the transfer case?

Thanks in advance

If it has the 70 transfer case it has a vacuum pod on the transfer case on the front output shaft housing. It looks like a flying saucer. It is engaged by a knob on the dash next to the high/ low lever.

A later model transfer case has a lever on the floor next to the shifter. Forward and left is high 2wd. straight back is high 4wd and push to the right is low range. Toyota put a gate in that would only allow 4wd low, but a lot of people leave it out so you can have 2wd low.

stock is:

2wd
I
I
4wd ---- 4wd low

It requires some special parts to use the 70 transfer case with the 4 speed trans. Chances are good you have the lever operated transfer case, but anything is possible.

I have the lever operated transfer, but have not tried engaging yet. Just lock the hubs then shift the transfer while neutral with clutch in? Thanks for the reply.
