I am looking for answers to the following questions in case any of you have any experience with them:

For an 86 FJ60

1. Do these require different pads or rotors than the OEM set?

2. Is there any place online where anyone has seen these sold?

Thanks in advance.

Winston

You dont need new rotors or anything, and you need regular 4runner pads for the 4runner calipers.

I havent seen anywhere with a real steal on the calipers, but napa had a good deal on mine, they are available most anywhere, shop around.

If you go with the larger V6 Mini truck/four runner calipers, you will want the larger 1" bore 80 series master cylinder to go with them. Marlin Crawler sells the correct master cylinder and has loaded calipers for a good price and no core charge. Another option on the calipers would be to call C-Dan and get his price on Toyota rebuilt calipers. I don't know whether not having cores would be an issue or not.

These larger Fourrunner calipers us a larger pad than the Cruiser calipers.

I run the Fourrunner calipers at both ends of one of my FJ40s. I've run them with the stock FJ40 disc brake M/C, and with a T100 M/C. I run the same calipers with stock drums on mini-trucks and Cruiser with stock M/C. I run these caliper with GM rear disc brake conversions with stock Cruiser (FJ40 and FJ60) M/Cs.

They all work fine. No need to change your M/C.

Thanks guys. What have you been paying for your 4 Runner calipers?

I didn't change out my M/C and like Mark has said, it works fine.

I found that when purchasing your calipers, it's cheaper to get them local since you can use your existing calipers for core. Also usually cheaper to buy them loaded (ready to go with pads).

While I normally do not like Auto Zone, I purchased a loaded pair of 4runner calipers there for like $85. Cheap. Have run them for about 1 1/2 years without any problems. Recently took the front end apart (swapped out the third member), and they looked fine. I think they have lifetime warranty.

What year 4 runner?

If youre going to bother go with post '86 IFS stuff. For that you'll need vented rotors, the IFS calipers and you should upgrade to the new master cylinder and posibly new booster.

Calipers

Carquest numbers for those that find this in a search. Application 1995 Toyota Forunner front with V6.
Left 17-1601 loaded caliper
Right 17-1600 loaded caliper $64.34 each from my CQ store.

What's this about vented this and post IFS that? Who can clear this muddy mod up? I would certainly like to do the mod but would like all the right parts the first time.

You already have vented rotors.. 60's and 62's came with them stock.

IFS = any toy truck after 86 is Independant Front Suspension. The V6 units had larger calipers. Which is what you are looking for..

You do not need a new master. You do not need new rotors (unless yours are worn out)

You get new calipers/pads and bolt them on your freshly turned rotors.. Then bleed your braking system. Done..

Pre 86 mini stuff is solid rotor.. and a waste of time. It would be a decrease in braking ability..

Like Mace said... All disc brake Cruisers have vented rotors. No need to swap anything there.

Good information. I really like the price of the loaded set too, $65 per is less than what I was thinking.

I already have the upgraded MC from my rear disc conversion and I do need new rotors. For others that may be in the same boat, what recommendations are there for rotors? Are OEM or NAPA replacements good, or would anyone recommend going with something more performance minded?

I do a good bit of VW tuning and although stock is not bad in the VW/Audi world, there are much better alternatives for the same price, so I wanted to ask the question.

I know I have vented rotors, hence the confusion with the statement above about post 86 blah blah, that must apply for fj60's. Gotta love unrelated info getting mixed in a post. Any first hand experience with this mod? Is the difference drastic? Any wheel fitment issues after? I need to do a front brake job anyway. According to the reciepts from the PO my brakes are 50,000 miles new. I'll do it when I redo the birfs and wheel bearings. I have plenty of pad left but they are throwing dust like crazy, I assume they were the cheapest crap available. Thanks for the good info.

i did calipers and the master at the same time, so keep that in mind with the subjective parts to follow:

- pedal feel is significantly firmer, truck stops much better
- loaded NAPA calipers are fine, brake pads supplied are dusty but work fine
- no fittment issues with stock LC wheels

This thread needed that link. Thanks.

Baldredhead, would you or anyone else recommend something not as dusty that you have used? Or if those just stop well, that is actually more important. I don't want crappy and dusty though.

So if i wanted to get 4Runner Calipers for my 1990 FJ62 what year 4Runner should i ask for at Napa?

Jason
