OK,
So I have a line on a 2002 4.8L Vortec for a very good price. The motor only has 33K miles on it. Comes from a truck that was rear ended twice. I need to know if I should pursue this for a V8 swap into my 1985 FJ60. I am planning to put a 4L60E behind it. Any and all advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Define "very good price" plz....

Advice: I think if you are going to do the engine swap thing... go for a 5.3 which would render better gas milage to power ratio......and info in here is plentiful

I think the 4.3 would give good power but for the effort an engine swap gig takes.. yah might as well go for an over powered engine...

If you do go for the 4.8.. post a thread as Im sure there has been many and there will be many more, that wonder if 4.8 is another option......

Good luck....

The good price is 350 for the engine. It is missing alternator and power steering pump. My original plan was to use a 5.3 and 4L60E, but I found this motor so I thought maybe this is a good idea. I believe the 4.8 is physically the saem as the 5.3 so brackets and what not should not be a problem. I will have to find a computer and harness though.

Please keep adding comments.

Thanks,

4.8 will have plenty of power for ya and it is the same as 5.3 but just has a smaller crank shaft. they share the same block, pistons, rods, and heads. there might be 30hp difference but you wont notice. alternators and power steering pumps are easy to come by and are fairly cheap.

On that note, you could locate the 5.3 crank and rods and make it a 5.3. You would need to make sure about injector sizing, computer software etc. but knowing how GM works, I'll bet it's easy.

Get everything with it. If you don't have an ECU and other Acc. it will negate the 300 dollars you saved by getting this one. Look around get what you want. You obviously have time to shop around.

X2 on getting everything you can. I know how it is getting blinded by low mileage motors.
I picked up a 5.3 with low mileage, but it was missing a bunch of vital items that when all was said and done cost me an additional 400.00 on top of the 800.00 I spent on the motor.

I dont have the motor anywhere near "IN" yet, so I cant really speak to the diff. between one and the other.

Iaintscared is THE MAN for the Vortec info.
