Hi

I am interested in swapping a 4.7 into a 4runner. I want a manual trans behind this, so I am assuming that the v8 would bolt right up to a 3.4L manual trans. Is this correct?

Has anyone done this?

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I'd love to see it done. I can't tow very much with my 2001 4Runner. That engine swap would change everything. $$$ however.

2uzfe is a big motor with its overhead cams, and the oil filter jets out the side of the block down low at the front. The water lines are also backwards as well as the fan rotation from any other Toyota motor. My understanding is the manual trans will bolt up but have no idea what will have to be done with the clutch and flywheel. Also, I don’t know what kind of programming will be involved with the computer as the computer controls the trans also.

Good luck, and get your tape measure out

wishful thinking...I think when the time comes I'll trade up to a 100 series that CAN tow 5-6000lbs

Body lift will take care of the motor height.

Remote oil filter.

Water lines not a big problem, can maybe fit the Tundra radiator if needed.

I wonder if the 3.4L flywheel would bolt up to the 4.7......that sounds like a long shot, but how hard could it be to get a solid flywheel made? People make custom bellhousings, seems like a flywheel would be cake.

Lots of others have done similar swaps that included wiring the auto trans in there too....this would be easier.

Well make sure you do a build thread here if you try this one.
How about you try to get used to an automatic and buy a cheap 03 4th gen with a 4.7 already in it? :)

My post was not meant to discourage, just stating some of the problems my friend ran into while swapping one of these motors into his rockbuggy. Its not so much the height of the motor as is the width. He figured out how to put the manual being that motor but decided the auto would be a better option. I don't remember the details. That motor freaking rocks in his truck.

Hmmm....no, no I appreciate the constructive criticism!

I suppose I could just get used to an auto and get a 4th gen, but everyone has one of those things.....and I think they are kinda ugly, heavy, bigger and worse off road...

Well I don't tow big loads so the 3rd gen V6 is my preference as well... oops I would say that being in the 3rd gen runner section :D

I wonder if the motor mounts would at least line up...

After all, it would not be bad to use the 5 speed auto behind this engine anyway

Anyone know if the engine will at least fit?

Id have to disagree w/ya on the off road part, Ive had a well built 99, and now wheeling a 04.

Im pretty happy :D the 04 (even with street tires) will go just about wanywhere my 99 would.
Id really love to see the V8 in a 3rd gen

If you decide to go for it, take lots of pictures and notes. Not sure which way the oil pan faces on the v8 tundra but on the pan on the 4th gen 4runner it is the opposite of the 3rd gen 4runner.

Do a Google search for 'Cebby's Engine swap'. I beleive his was a 2nd Gen and he used a 1UZ FE instead of the 2 UZ FE. The only difference being that the 2UZ is a cast iron block, opposed to the aluminum block of the 1UZ (roughly 150lbs diff.). Within reason, the same horsepower/torque, aluminum intake and heads. Some say the bottom end of the 2UZ is weaker then the 1 UZ, but this is coming from 'Ricers' pushing these motors close to 600-800 HP without changing much!
I did follow his build and it was tight and a body lift being a must to clear the oil pan...which you will have to use a rear sump out of a later Tundra.
As for transmissions, they do make conversion bellhousings but all are located from companies from 'Down Under'. They also offer this in 'kit' form..BH, FW, clutch, blah, blah blah...just depends how deep your pockets are really.
If you do alittle digging, you will find that Toyota did put a couple of non-electronic controlled, fully manual transmissions/xfer into the Tundras. I would have to dig it back up but I do have model #'s for those transmissions/xfer's.
I am personally looking to throw a 2UZ into my 40 just for something different and will utilize a complete powertrain out of a later model Tundra truck. I am also using a hybrid cruiser/mini rear axle due to the center output....which you won't have to contend with on your truck.

I am sure I missed alot and have merely regergatated info that I have found here and there. I'll list a couple of websites that deal with the 1UZ/2UZ stuff and the conversions.

Conversions:
www.dellowauto.com.au (can utilize a Toy. 3,4, or 5 spd manual with their bellhousing on a 1 UZ FE)
www.rodshop.com.au/toyota/landcruiser.htm (Bottom of page)

It can be done, but it isn't easy, try and find a wrecked truck and just try and pull EVERYTHING out of it. I did it piece by piece and it became very expensive and time consuming.

Ryan.

Not to derail this but I loved your pig when it was up forsale on here, are you the new owner or the original and you decided to keep/finish? Any update or build info on the truck?

Might want to consider a supercharger on the 3.4 That's what I did and it tows like a v8 or at least like the new 4.0

5 speed is an excellent trans with a 3.50 1st gear.

As for the engine fitting, sorry I dont know.

it's a tight fit, but it's been done before. Search T1Tundra on PBB. He's done a few.
