I have read all of the threads I could find about gearing but would like some reassurance before I order. My setup: daily driver-82 FJ60 w/ stock gears, 5-speed trans, and 33" tires. I thought that the stock gears were 4.11 but after some of the posts that I have read I will need to do some more investigating to confirm. I would like to move up to no less than 35" tires and may even go as big as 37". Originally I planed on 4.88's but now I fear that may be to low for 33 but maybe not 35-37. I now think that I may go with 4.56 instead but do not want to regret it later. Suggestions please!!

Your stock gears are 3.73

I say do tires and 4.88s all at once. You'll have the gear for the 37s but not too much for the 35's

4.88-x 5, 4.56-x 1

I like my 4.56s and 37s just fine (3B motor), if I had 4.88s I'd rev pretty high just trying to keep up with traffic on the highway.

After using the calculator @ http://www.csgnetwork.com/speedcalc.html I would agree. If I stay with the 4.56 and 35 or 37 I will achieve greater highway speeds without greatly increasing the RPM's. However, the 4.88 seem as if they will cause an increase in RPM and decrease in top speed making it better off road. Is this correct? Is this what others have experienced? I do spend most of the time on the road since this is a daily driver. On the weekends and events it does get used off road on a fairly regular basis.

Thanks again for everyones help.

Depends?????

I have a fj60 with H55, 4.11's, 33's, lockers front and rear, OME. It will run over 70 mph on the hwy and does fine on the trails. I have called 3-4 places and asked them about gearing for when I add my body lift and go to 35's. All of them have said 4.88's would still allow me to run 65mph with no issues. If I get 36's on, it would still work by their calculations. Just my 2 cents worth. Craig

Thanks for your input!

Now you can do 70mph, and with 4.88's and 35's would allow for 65mph. Did they say what your expected top speed would be if you went to 36's or 37's and 4.88's v. the same tires and 4.56's?
