I took my 3rd member out this week to check the carrier bearing preload. It turns out it was for naught because I was only able to turn it 1 notch, I tried 2 but there was no backlash at all with 2 turns. After reinstalling it, I developed a substantial leak at the 3rd member. It seems to be from the bottom 3 studs somewhere but I will take it back a part to correct it. I used a factory gasket and no RTV. Any suggestions what to look for? I will report my findings later this week.

FIPG for life

Are you loyal to a certain brand? I have used Permatex Gear Oil RTV Gasket Maker Part # 81182, on my Dodge with great success but that is what they used from the factory. I see Toyota has their own which is probably the Aisin branded for Toyota.

I only use Toyota FIPG. I had leaks in my 9.5 rear diff with permatex. Used FIPG when I pulled it (no gasket) and all good.

I have used “the right stuff” for years. It can be put into service immediately and I have never had a leak. If you do need to take things apart again, it will take some effort.

Sorry that your effort was for naught! I was just about to do my own but decided against it. It's good to hear yours wasn't too loose.

Well.... Apparently, I was sloppy :( When I took everything apart the gasket looked decent when I pulled it from the axle housing. Then, I found a portion of the original gasket behind that. It was not the new gasket's fault, it was mine. I was very diligent about cleaning the 3rd member but missed some on the housing.

I put it back together using only FIPG ($15 from dealer) and did not use a gasket. Fingers crossed

Will work

upon my last inspection yesterday, there is no more puddle under the diff and the housing is dry. At this point I will call the FIPG a success. I am sure it will suck to remove when i install a locker :)

I started a reply earlier about using Hylomar. Works great - sealed up leaks on a Rover I owned, which was a miracle! - and doesn't harden so you can remove/reassemble as needed...

did you remove the whole 3rd member/diff? pulled drive axles out etc....? I want to check my preload and am a bit scared I'll mess something up, then not have it available to drive to work on Monday....
