-Strawberry milkshake-
The term refers to when the radiator's lower transmission cooler develops a hole, allowing the engine coolant and ATF to mix. It resembles a runny, foamy milkshake

The solution is to mount a dedicated trans cooler in front of the radiator and bypass the stock cooler location all together.

A couple options-
B&M 70268 SuperCooler 11" x 7.25" x 0.75"
Hayden 405 10" x 15.875" x 0.75"
Hayden 678 11" x 9.5" x 0.75"
Tru-cool LPD thin 4454 7.25" x 11" x 0.75"
Tru-cool LPD fin and plate 4543 7.25" x 11" x 0.75"
Perma-cool 1012 7.5" x 12.5"x 0.75"

Any one of these should be just fine considering the OEM radiator cooler looks like this. - photo courtesy of Jin Chris

I'd add the dreaded "strawberry milkshake" radiator/trans cooler line failure.

I changed the radiator on my 4R as a preventative measure and have no regrets.

Anyone have the complete FSM for my 96 4runner? the complete version link isn't working and I don't want to join over 1000 pdf files together to make the complete FSM

thanks for any help!

Both links work for me....
http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1996/Totota.4Runner.1996.2002.SIL.rar
and
http://www.ncttora.net/1996/Totota.4Runner.1996.2002.SIL.zip

You should know that while this manual covers most everything having to do with a 96, it's for a 2002 model year and several things are different. Like, there is no mention of the 3RZ 4cylinder engine, cause it didn't come in a 2002 4runner.
peace

All the links I have for the online FSM have been taken down.

Just wanted to say this post is very comprehensive.

Love the Timing Belt/Tune up sections with OEM part numbers. Made me join the board just to post my sincere thanks!
