I am researching this idea and it will happen. I have both trucks 86 FJ60 has bad engine, 88 FJ62 is very rusty, bad brakes and bad wiring to rear of truck. Runs great. I would like to put the 3FE into the 60 with the 4 speed behind and manual shift transfer case.

Who has done this? Is there any info already out there? Links please. I will document and take as many pictures as I can. But I would rather not re-invent the wheel.

The 3 FE will then get a turbo slapped on to take away the effect of living at 5400' above sea level.

Can I use the 60 tank with an externally mounted fuel pump?
Will the 3FE sit on the 2F motor mounts?
Will a 2F rear Main fit a 3FE?
Will a 2F Valve cover fit the 3FE head?

I am sure that I will have many more questions. Hopefully this will be ready to run by the winter.

Been done. Might want to consider a 2FE setup. Much more power and all stock parts. The search button is your friend. John

No 2FE, I don't have a good block. 3FE it is.

The search is not all it is cracked up to be. Just saying.

Hi All:

IIRC, Jim Godwin wrote an article in the Toyota Trails (the TLCA magazine) about doing this exact swap about ten years ago.

Good luck!

john, howdy! i was going to do the same down here in casper. 88 motor into an 85. I got the followin from alaska60 on here as advice. hope this helps you, I decided to keep looking for a stock motor for the 85.

" None of the mounting spots will line up for you. i.e. tranny, crossmember, exhaust. TC..ect
It can be done though...."

Excellent info in the link from lovetoski, Thanks a lot.

My thoughts are that anyone who has gone manual behind that 3FE in a 62 loves it. I have the parts and my local Genius Mechanic Friend owes me big for an addition I put on his shop last fall.

I have researched many options including V8, and diesel. I even bought a truck with a thought to be good motor. But even though it had good compression the #4 cylinder was scored pretty bad. So I found an FJ 62 very local to me for cheap....I also have a turbo set up from a 4 liter jeep motor new in the box just hanging around.

I am totally jacked to get this thing going again, and with the turbo it should wake this thing up pretty good.

John

Oh yeah, I am parting this 62 most everything is available. The tail lights are shot and the motor and all that stuff goes to me.

I am in the midst of helping do a 2FE in a 40 series. Not trying to talk you out of the turbo, but yes, as mentioned, there is a lot of details available here on MUD from some of those conversions that should help you do a 3FE into a 60. By the way, I am looking for a set of Aisin hubs if you still have them on your doner rig. Thanks, and good luck, John

When I did the swap I used an '88 FJ62 for the donor and swapped over the wiring harness, 3FE, computer, exhaust, fuel tank and lines, but this can be without such an intensive swap if you can tease out the wiring for the EFI system and use an external pump.

I retained the H42 thus did not have to deal with relocating the tranny crossmember and the 3FE dropped perfectly into place on the 2F frame mounts. The bellhousing and flywheel will bolt on to the 3FE without modification.

The gas pedal will need a minor mod to fit the 3FE cable and a couple of holes must be drilled through the firewall for wiring and cable routing.

Most of this swap is straight bolt on.

I assume that I can use to 62 pedal. Is this Correct?

No, the 62 pedal will not simply bolt in to the 60 body. I don't remember exactly what I did but I combined pieces of the 60 and 62 pedals to hook up the throttle cable and the hand throttle.

I used my 60 pedal and just drilled a hole in the firewall.

The trans cross member and engine mounts lined up fine for me. You do have to make a new exhaust unless you get the whole thing from a 62. I did a swap from an 80 series 3FE so I had to mount the air cleaner and smog stuff since it didn't line up to the existing holes but an FJ62 into a 60 should not have those issues.

To answer your questions.

Yes
I don't think so but check the part numbers.
Never tried but why do you want to swap them?

Frank

I currently drive a 87' FJ60 with a 3FE+H42 combo. I have posted about it many times. PM me if you have any more specific questions.

Busy with the efi conversion as well. I had a 3F with carb and replaced it with a 2F .
I then imported the 3f-e head and intake manifold.
Will be using aftermarket ecu as it allows for easier setup with less sensors - stock has loads of sensors that are old technology.
My Spitronics ecu is cheap and require only TPS , water temp sensor, air temp sensor, o2 sensor and MAP sensor. MAP sensor also a better option if you consider a turbo.
I already have the turbo unit but still not sure it is going in - if it does go in the the max boost will be 0.3 bar or 5 psi.

So please keep us updated

I thought someone had taken this approach but couldn't remember.

If I recall the cable even came with the grommet to pass through the firewall.

I think it's a good idea to use an FJ62 as opposed to an FJ80 3FE. I used one out of a 91 and so a lot of little things (smog switches, silencer, air box) didn't line up to existing holes. It's not that big of a deal, just more work mounting stuff.

I just replaced the fuel pressure regulator and put Rock Auto rebuilt injectors in my engine. I should have done that before the install. I'd say unless you know for sure your donor engine is running right (not rich), replace the fuel damper, pressure regulator and injectors. At this age if they aren't bad they probably will be soon (assuming they are original).
