Checking In

I just drove my first TLC home yesterday. Its a 1991 with 270K miles. The body is pretty straight, but the interior is about a 5 out of 10. Needs some love. Today, I washed/scrubbed all of the west Texas dirt off of it and cleaned the interior as much as I could in my driveway. I found about $4 in change, 1/2 eaten chicken nuggets, some crayons, toothpicks, burned matches, etc under the center console. I took the whole center piece out and scrubbed it clean. I also spray painted the black trim around the shifters, so it looks a little cleaner.

I drove it 130mi yesterday and it ran well other than the tranny thunking a little. AC is cold and motor seems pretty strong.

I'm pumped and ready to get modding!:D

Welcome! Congrats! Post some pics of the beast!

I picked this up a few weeks ago. 165K miles.
Small area on the right rear to fix but the paint is actually in good shape for the age. All others I looked at had no clear left on them.
I was told it was garage kept for the 12 years they owned it.

I like it, been wanting a Cruiser forever.
It runs well, a complete tune up had just been done and I adjusted the clattery valves when I got it home.

It has a few oil leaks to seal back up in the usual places, nothing major.

The engine could have some more get up and go but it is what it is.
It's not a BBC powered Suburban that's for sure.
Made a 400 mile trip with it pulling passes and stuff at 80, but you have to time it right and think ahead.
Not gonna blast past anyone in the middle.
Better start getting up to speed and be able to maintain it.

It's far better than an 80s Mercedes diesel powered car I can tell ya though.

But I'll be keeping this rig for as long as it lasts which will probably be a long time.
The engine and tranny seem to be in good shape so I'll plenty of time to start gathering parts for a diesel transplant.
If the engine got better mileage I would leave it be.
But at 14 MPG on the freeway I may as well be driving a 454 Burb.

But being a diesel tech, a rod knocker looks to be in my future.
Most likely a Cummins, as I'm Cummins certified and have great access to parts and service info for anything Cummins.

Looking for a wrecked 93+ now for a parts rig.
Looking to upgrade the axles to lockers if I can find one and I need another tcase to tear down and convert to part time.

I like to gather everything and do it all at one time, because it always turns out to be a major project no matter how small it starts.
Keeps the down time to a minimum.

Been driving and wheeling Chevy trucks for 29 years, kinda wish I would have gotten a Cruiser years ago.

Just got it home shot.

Sweet Jeebus it's almost like all Portland got were Cruisers that color. I just took the splash guards off mine before it gets the bodywork and the paint. When you head towards a motor swap let me know. Enjoy the sun! Love that rig.

The Company Truck

She's mostly stock, but thanks to some pricks who stole her a few years back, I'm running 17 inch tires. Removed the splash guards from the old girl, she looks slimmer, and will look great when I get around to the repaint. She's my daily, and despite her inability to make the windows work rapidly, and her insatiable appetite for unleaded, I'll own her for a long time. Constantly considering a Tdi swap, and I got a hankering for a 5 spd.... She's a '92 3FE. I love that ARACO put her together so well that 20 years later she's a daily, and so weirdly easy to deal with.

Hello everyone...touching base from the Caribbean (Puerto Rico). Just got my 91 fj80 last Saturday from the God parent of my soon to be first born... They bought it with 12k mi on the clock, used it to commute to and from church, and I got it with 189k on the clock... I'm the third owner... It's been sitting for about two yrs... Replaced spark plugs so far, remove old tint from windows, cleaned all the inside, fixed a broken wire for the headlights, lubed the window tracks for smooth operation and the sunroof one too... There's a small leak from the PS hose or pump that I need to address and a leak behind the PS front wheel (looks like a seal may be broken from front axle)... Need to find a couple of trim pieces for the pwr window switches up front, and the thin chrome one for the ds head light (top one)... Also the shocks for the hood, and the plastic handle to ope up the tailgate section of the trunk and the two front hub covers... The vehicle was always well kept but being stopped for so long got to it a bit... I also need a new radiator... I got her for $2,700 b/c I know them and they werent really selling anyway... I like to think I got a good deal even though she needed a couple of things... Will buy tomorrow new fuel & air filters and fuel injector cleaner... Will also check the fuel gauge b/c is stuck on empty and fuel light is on even though I had filled the tank, so maybe is just some cleaning it needs... Will upgrade little by little with a slight lift, and 33's... Will be asking a lot of questions and reading so I can build my beauty nicely and take her offroading around the island with the wife and kid... Nice to meet all of you amd hope to do it personally one of this days...:)

Might be mine

Hi Everyone,

I maybe joining the club today. I was in the market for a FZJ, but stumbled on this 91 FJ. It is a friend of mine's vehicle and it has lived an easy 150K mile life from everything I know and can tell.

Back in February, it had all the fluids dropped and replaced, then also had the knuckle work done. Plus it has new tires and brakes.

He is asking for 6k, because that is what he has in it. I feel more comfortable spending 5 on this. However, haggling over 1k with a person you know just isn't as comfortable to me.

Could you let me know your thoughts on if it is a fair deal? I know it's not a "great" deal, but that is ok, most great deals never are really what they appear to be at the time of purchase.

Future mods - Interior refresh (Metric TLC), ARB front (non-winch), OME replacement springs, 33" tires, if I can swing a gearing (locker upgrade) first.

Cheers,

Ryan

1991 in Atlanta

Well, I made my first FJ80 purchase this past month. Shows 243,000 miles on the clock, but it does have a rebuilt engine. So far it has been good, it does have some problems of course. It was certainly used as it should be in it's life. It was a Utah car - it does have some rust but the frame and critical areas seem solid. We'll see how this goes...I am a vintage mustang fan/restorer myself so I am trying to get out of the mindset of nit picky restoring phases. (I was trying to find the proper color code/finish for the center console shift area so it would be "correct" for instance.)

Well, I just paid $1800 on a '91 Fj80 w/ 270k on it. I have spent about another $1000 in it bringing her back up to snuff so far (pm, new radiator and various parts). Lots left to do, but $6K seems a little high to me. It really depends on how much you like and want it? If its super nice then go for it!

Just Picked Up My First FJ80

A neighbor or mine has owned the rig for 15 years now. It's a 1992. 5 years ago he got a brand new Sequoia, but kept the FJ80 because he didn't want to sell it. It's literally been sitting in his backyard ever since...A few times over the years I mentioned that I might be interested in buying it, but never seemed to want to sell it....

Anyway, while I've owned dozens of 4x4's, anything from Scouts to Unimogs, this is only my second Landcruiser--the first being a 1980 FJ-40 that was one of my favorite rigs ever....

Looking forward to listening and learning from other FJ80 fans!

First Land Cruiser FJ80 ever!

Here's my little gem I picked up today. A Silver '91 F80 TLC w/ 3F-E that doesn't like starting after a ride, and all kinds of fuse mayhem and 22 years of 'character.'

6k seems a little high. I bought a 92 last year for 7k with 100k miles and I've already dropped about 5k just trying to make it a reliable daily driver. But I would never expect to get 12k for it because it's pretty stock except for the tires. I knew going in that on paper these trucks are not a great investment...sure the engine is solid...but between the after-market mods and the almost constant maintenance issues...these trucks can really suck you dry. To us cruiser enthusiasts though, it's not about the money. Just FYI though, if I would have known how the 3F-E engine handles going up steep hills in the mountains, I would have held out for the bigger engine of the '93-'97 models.

Hello everybody,

bought from Sam D, huh?

Bought my '92 about a month ago with 125.5k miles.

It's had a hard life, I think, so don't let the mileage speak for itself.

The only overall photo I have. But trust me, it looks better in a blurry, dark photo for the time being...

I've done the front axle service with wheel bearings and brakes.

And now I've done an oil change, rebuilt the power steering pump and flushed with fresh ATF, bypassed the smog pump, and replaced the hood struts.

Looking to tackle the u-joints this weekend.
