Forgive me if this has been answered by someone on here already, or if this is not feasible. I’m very new to working on engines, especially the 3FE.
I recently purchased my new to me 1992 FJ80, 165,000 miles with a 3FE motor. I’ve been having a really annoying high pitched whistle noise coming from the engine for a while. Well I’ve narrowed it down to the air smog pump, I can spray WD40 on the pulley and the noise goes away for about 30 mins before returning.
I would love to do the whole de-smog thing but unfortunately I live in California so that won’t fly. My question is, can I bypass the air pump by putting the smaller dayco # 22528 belt on and leaving the pump attached? That way when I need to get smogged I can put the old belt back on beforehand. Would I need to disconnect anything else in the EGR as the air pump would not be turning anymore?
Again I’m not sure if this is even possible, I have very limited knowledge. I’m trying to avoid spending money on a rebuild for the pump, or having it seize on a roadtrip and be left stranded. Thank you!
