Forgive me if this has been answered by someone on here already, or if this is not feasible. I’m very new to working on engines, especially the 3FE.

I recently purchased my new to me 1992 FJ80, 165,000 miles with a 3FE motor. I’ve been having a really annoying high pitched whistle noise coming from the engine for a while. Well I’ve narrowed it down to the air smog pump, I can spray WD40 on the pulley and the noise goes away for about 30 mins before returning.

I would love to do the whole de-smog thing but unfortunately I live in California so that won’t fly. My question is, can I bypass the air pump by putting the smaller dayco # 22528 belt on and leaving the pump attached? That way when I need to get smogged I can put the old belt back on beforehand. Would I need to disconnect anything else in the EGR as the air pump would not be turning anymore?

Again I’m not sure if this is even possible, I have very limited knowledge. I’m trying to avoid spending money on a rebuild for the pump, or having it seize on a roadtrip and be left stranded. Thank you!

Have you read up on the 3FE desmog procedure?
I think you can run a shorter belt to bypass the pump, disconnect all the smog related solenoids wiring and just leave everything in place.

I have a couple times but am still trying to fully understand how the belts all line up. All of what I have seen is people taking everything off, I just want to disconnect it all.

Okay thank you I will give it a shot! I would love to take it all out but California says otherwise.

Here is pic of how the belts are routed .
You will have to replace the outer belt that goes around the PS and smog pump with a shorter belt to bypass the pump

Just bypass the smog pump with the correct belt.
The smog pump VSV is only active in very limited situations which I can't remember offhand.
I replaced mine with a York compressor for on board air and changed nothing else. Passed NJ inspection without issue and affected nothing else.

hi ,
your
really annoying high pitched whistle noise coming from the engine you have narrowed down to the air smog pump, your spraying WD40 on the pulley and the noise goes away for about 30 mins before returning. , You are also spraying that WD40 on that smog pump drive belt , its either a super OLD and crusty dry-rotted belt , or a Chairman MOE market region ghetto-grade belt that is incorrect or failing to say the least ........

.
Dayco brand drive belts fall under
Chairman MOE market region quality for dam sure ....

.

The link below is what you need and want , for you
r 3F-E , there made in JAPAN , correct COGGED size and the JIS Rubber Spec.s will provide a long-time service life without any WD-40

.

when your ready for the correct OEM TOYOTA Cogged De-Smog drive Belt , please PM me , i stock them ,

.
For now @cruisermatt Cruisermatt;s OFF ROAD has the correct 3pc factory drive belt set up you need and want ......

.
I only run OEM Toyota drive belts on ALL my personal family fleet and my
3F-E , i never have Chairman MOE Spec. Squeals .......

this is the way ........

Thank you! Was wondering if it may be the belt. It is pretty old, no clue what the PO used.
