I've done a ton of searching and found a few topics on the 33's and 4:88's with the 3FE. Really couldn't tell if they were ok. I also found that the 4:56's are hard to find, and not worth regearing to. Is that true?

I've got to rebuild the front axle, so will go ahead and change the gears while I'm at it, and rebuild the rear axle as well. I have 32" BFG AT's now, that are really around a 31" tire. I will defin. be going to 33's in the near future, but no bigger. Has anyone run with 32's, and 4:88's?

Thanks.

i dont see the point in 4:88's with anything less than 33" tires.. your ratio would be too low, and your highway gas milage would be pretty bad.. id say dont bother, or lift it and put on some 35's!

Do it, you're mileage will be great in the city and wont drop all that much on the highway as long as you drop your speed a little.

Not sure what you're trying to do here. The FJ80s came with 31x10.50R15 and 4.11 gears from Toyota. 32x11.50R15 will fit on the OEM alloys with a marginal difference in power.

I run 4.56 gears in my 91 with 33x10.50R15 on the street which is fairly close to stock gearing. I run 36x12.50R15 Swampers in the woods and I'm a bit under-geared on the street but fine in the woods.

Thanks. I'm trying to figure out what will give the Tractor motor a little more power. I have some towing to do a few times a year. I think the 80 is up to the task with the right gears. I really want to keep from chnging to a V-8 if I don't need to. I like all Toyota if it will work. I love the trucks size and stout build.

Thanks for all the info, I'm going to buy the gears today.

FJ-62s came with 4.11s and 28" tires. I run 4.56s with my BFG 31x10.5 ATs (so ~30.6). Not sure if the A440 and A442 gear ratios are the same but this works out pretty well for me. Might be a bit high if you run 70-75+ a lot (assuming the same overdrive ratio). I'll be moving to 32s (31.7) when I replace my current tires to take my highway rpms down just a bit.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to pick the gears up right now.

4:88's

If it's got a 3FE, it don't got an A442. Gear ratios are the same 62 and FJ80, and the 442's only difference is the slight increase in electronics and the viscous coupler. 4.10s are stock with the factory size of 245/75r15, 31x10.50 is factory option. 4.56s and 31's sounds like it would be better. 4.88s and 33's would be great.

I was under the impression that FJ-80s got the A442 with an adapter on the bellhousing or a different bellhousing to mate to the F/2F/3F engine. This was from my research into putting a 1FZ in front of my A440 (different bellhousing patterns).

Mark's lists the A442 as having a 4th gear of .765:1 versus the A440's .717:1.

Greta info. I've been a little nervous about running 4:88's with 32's. Afraid it would be too low. Thanks for the info. I'm looking forward to a new driving experience.

Rebuilt front axle, rear axle, 4:88's, new belts, adv. timing, tune-up, new power steering pump, brakes, and rebuilt d-shafts.

The 91/92 FJ80s shipped with the A440F and HF2A transfer case (FullTime 4WD, non-VC, push button lockable in high range). In 1991 when I brought mine home from the dealer, 31" tires and alloy rims were part of the "Towing Package" which included fender flares and an aux transmission cooler. In 92, IIRC, the towing package became standard issue. I have seen only 1 early 91 in the US without 31" tires and with steel rims. It's pretty safe to say that 31x10.50R15 were standard issue from Toyota. There were no options for final drive ratios.

4.88 would be more suited for 35" tires IMO. With 4.88 and 32s your RPMs will always be high, your speedo will be way off.

i ran 33s and 4.88s in my 3FE powered FJ 62. loved them. then i went to 34s... still loved them.

are you a member of the 3FE group on yahoo? if not, join them! amazing fellas.

Thanks. I'll join them.

You just contradicted yourself. 31's are FACTORY OPTION for the Toyota LC80, no matter what version/type/engine/transmission/country. 4.10s and 28-29" are STOCK no matter what versions/type/engine/transmission/country, it's just that Mr. T thought it would be OK to put the 31s on most of everything, while they were slowly working towords the FZJ80.

You have a stock FJ80, and you haven't tried 4.88s and 32s yet, and 98% of the experience on the 80s section is with the 212hp 1FZFE not the 155hp 3FE, if you would notice in the 60's section that most are running 4.88s with 33-35" tires, they have the same tranny, same motor, and same stock diff gears with LESS weight and LESS driveline to spin.

I'd vote 4.88's would be the best option for a 3FE'd 80 with tires 32-35 and 4.56's should have been part of the "tow package" that included the 31" tires.

im running 33/12,15 on my stock 4:11 and i do feel a difference in take off power and such.SOOOO guess what i will be gearing sometime, but im starting to think 4:56 will be a waste of my time being i will wheel it often.so man just go ahead and throw the 4:88 in and be done with it,just in case you ever want to lift it and go with even bigger tires:beer:

Thanks again alkaline, and 88. I bought the gears today, 4:88's, and they're being installed. I'm on hold to finish as the Slee Birf alternates are out of stock for a few days. As soon as the 95+ Birfs, and Dflanges get here, I'll have my Cruiser back. I've been driving the MJ around... it's scarin' the local shoppers :D

I was very tempted to order the lift today, got to talk to Christo at Slee about using spacers, and he said waiting to lift it right would be better. So, soon... just a small lift though...

Thanks again for the help. I really needed some real world info.

I went with Yukon gears, I've read that they're not popular with some of the Cruiser heads. But, I've used them for years with no problems.
