3B alternators - Has anyone tried these?

I can't see a vacuum pump there Todd

Ya..it looks you would need to add your old vacuum unit.. The splined rotor is there.. and the mounting pad looks right..
But for those who either do not have one ( doing a conversion ) .. or are being asked for to much money for a rebuild due to a toasted stator or rotor.. it may be a good option..

But does the splined rotor match the splines in a 3B vacuum pump? There are lots of alternators out there that look close.

That I do not know.. Someone there in the US would have to call.. I was just throwing it out there as a possibility.. Either way.. it fits some vacuum pump.. and if you could find it.. to hook it up surely wouldn't be the several hundred dollars that I hear they can cost up there or imported from AUST.

It looks the same as:

3B & 13B-T maybe 2H Alternator Replacement

After a long hard search I found a Alternator from a 84-85 Toyota pick-up DLX with a 2.4L diesel it's the same exact alternator for 3B and 13B-T. The only thing you need to do is replace the new alternator pulley with the pulley from your old alternator and everything else plugs in.

I took a look at the 3B & 2H manuals and Toyota LC micro fiche they look the same. Take a look at the Napa Auto Parts and Rock Auto Parts web-sites.

Alternator is from a:
84-85 Toyota Pick-up DLX
2.4L Diesel
12 volt system
55-60 amp
Vac Pump fine splined
internal regulated

Napa Auto Parts, does not come with vacuum pump
#14675 or Ray #138292

On the Napa alternators I went with the Premium Alternators. These have free replacement warranty as long as you keep your invoice. Take note, Napa no longer carries the Beck/Arnley alternators

Napa Premium Alternators Prices:
#14675 $170
Ray #138292 $164

Rock Auto Parts, comes with vacuum pump
Beck/Arnley #1860609

Alternator to Vacuum Pump O-Ring
new O ring for mounting your vacuum pump is 55mm x 2mm you can get this O-ring at a hydraulic shop.

Hope this helps

That's not really good for us 24V guys;). I've got a 12HT alternator in the shed, it's 24V and 45A I believe.
Problem is that the shaft for the pulley is totally different, though a pulley can be made to fit obviously. But it's got a busted vac pump and the one on the 3B alt is different, it didn't fit altough it looks the same.
Easy upgrade if you can get a pulley that fits.

Seems these alternators and pumps are very pricy and hard to find. Wonder if anyone has thought of fabing up a seperate bracket to run a seperare vacume pump from another common brand of vehicle and use a ac/delco alternator as the alternator replacment? Seems this would eliminate the "hard to find parts syndrome"

I'm converting to the internally regulated alternator used on the Isuzu NPR/GMC truck. I think it's 80 amps @ 12v. They are available with a vacuum pump for $150 or so from most parts outlets. You need to modify or fabricate your own mounting brackets. You can buy three of these things for the cost of one Toyota diesel alternator.

Rufusthedufus,

Thanks for the big heads up! If you can get some accurate dimentions, I can put it into autocad. Perhaps there would be a market for the brackets and these alternator/vacume pumps?

The 14675 alternator does fit the vac pump on the 3B and 13bt alternator, but it is clocked a little bit different. I only needed the regulator and brushes so I was able to use my old case with the new components.

I plan on going with an electric vacuum pump and replacing my alternator with a delco-remy 22si 160A alternator. That alt is from OTR trucks, so it is available everywhere. Thanks to Magnus for the alternator part number. According to him, I'll need to increase the size of the hole on the bracket, but otherwise should be a direct fit.

How about a part number?

Please post anything up about either the option of a larger alternator (part number) and electric vacuum pump (part info) or the NPR alternator. Im looking to upgrade the alternator and dont want to buy a new BJ alternator that is barely adequate then buy a whole other set up not too much later.

I am interested in this set up. Electric vacuum set ups are everywhere and can be had for pretty cheaply and they are easy to hook up. 160A would be pretty great for lights, CB, winch, radio and fridge Ill be running. Is there any information on this set up? is it internally or externally regulated? What is involved in switching from externally regulated to internally?

Bump. Anyone? Im in need of something that is around 100 amps....

From some reading, its an internally regulated alternator which is good as that makes it easier to find a suitable alternator. Im interested in running one of the NPR diesel alternators. It lets me run a vacuum pump (rather than an electrical, aftermarket set up that opens to possible failure) and up the amperage by 30 or 40 amps.

FWIW

in one of my old threads I placed contact information for a guy here in the states that sells brand new internal spline/ brushes and rotor thats exact for the 3B 12V alt? He may have everything you need for 24V as well. I think the cost was around $150 in total, took to ALt shop and they threw it in been perfect ever since
