Been lurking for awhile following buildups and finally decided to sign-up. I have a 72 FJ40 with a 396 BBC. When I turn off the keys to the ignition the motor wants to keep turning and turns over once or twice (without catching) until I turn the igntion back on to turn it on. On a possible related note I've been having a battery drain problem. Any ideas on what might be the problem? I'm thinking something on the ignition relay? Suggestions on troubleshooting this would be appreciated.

Ignition switch? You could try hooking a multi-meter (set for amps) and look for current draw. If there is a draw pull each fuse to try and narrow where the problem might be. From there you would have to use the wiring diagram to narrow it a little more.

Is it dieseling when you turn it off, or does the starter engage when you try to shut it off?

if it is deiseling, turn your carb idle down

carefull turning the ignition switch back on when it's deiseling unless you wanna be buying a new muffler. Re-ignition, Pow!

Dieseling it is. This is my first Carbed motor I've spent a lot of time on so didn't even think of that. I think the reserve tank was running 87 Octane so I might be able just to run premium for now, but the idle will be my next target. As far as the battery drain I'm thinking of just putting a disconnect on the battery for now, it's a dual system with a painless block so not as easy as one of those conenctors from harbor freight, but a bit of extra security for a rig with no locks.

Thanks, I'll probably be more than a lurker from now on.

Just shut the truck off in gear, so that you can determine if it's a dieseling [fuel] issue, or an electrical one.

Best

I would check the timing. It's possible that carbon build up could cause it too but timing would be my first check.
