This is only for the guys with 35's and 2.5" lift. I've seen it in person and action but I want to see and hear what you guys think about it. So could you guys post some good pics up. Also what kind of wheeling do any of you do. What are you opinions on keeping the stock gears and running 35's no extra bull**** just stock gears and 35's

Sucks. No power, stressing out the crank, mileage is horrible (cause I have to rev it so hard). 4.88s are sitting the garage waiting for an opportunity to install. Sure, it can be done (as I do it now), but it will be a bad compromise IMHO. Out of curiosity, are you looking to do this strictly to save costs? Because there really is no other reason to avoid the re-gear. And if cost is an issue, how are you affording $250 x 5 for 35" tires?

My $0.02,

Don't you know you can't do that! You have to have the whizbang lift to consider running 35" tires. Be careful or the aticulation will cause your piston return springs to rattle loose and your muffler harmonic impeller will be thrown out of balance. :)

I have 4.11 on a 1HD-T '90 model. No problems with power or mileage. Unfortunately wheels hit whenever I fly.

Kalawang,
is that the street that is slanted or is your rig sitting much higher in the rear?

The rig is 2" higher in the rear. I always had a nose droop, but it became more visible because I added a winch to the alloy bullbar, which is pretty hefty too. BTW, the street is also sloped downwards so that exagerates the tail lift.

Bear 80 thanks for posting this thread because I am thinking about throwin some 35's on my rig once my 33's wear down. And I know its been talked a lot about the facts but i want personal opinions just like you. So thanks again for saving my time writting a thread and hopefully we will both be rolling on 35's soon!

I ran 35 on 4.10 for a while, Here in colorado the power loss was not a fun thing. fuel ecomany sucked. could not wait to drop my 4.88 in the rig. As for Texas, see Derek post. even when you shift into low range you could rund into haveing the torque convertor stall as you try to climb objects. Fuel ecomany jumped from 9-10 for me to 13-14 on my rig.
As for the lift I had 4 inch lift in the past with MTR 315's drove it like that for about 80k miles, Some rub in back, but none in front. I did have some of Slee's front contol arms at the time. Buy the tires and then sort all the junk out after. Make the bump stops you will need, then see if you can live with the perfomance on and off the trail. Why ask the same question that other have asked? As NIKE says JUST DO IT. LIve with your problems after. later robbie

Bear80,

I have asked the same question and this is my plan. I'm running the 2.5" heavy with two OME top out spacers on each spring along with the caster correction. I have pm..ed many great people on this board and the answer is you will get occasional rub when wheeling. I lowered my bump stops in back(easy mod) So my plan is too put on 315/70-16 in the flavor of BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM--I would go with the goodyear MTR's but they are hard to find and about twice as much here in Mexico. I also plan on eventually installing 4.88's but that may be a while down the road. When considering tires you may want to check out the geolander AT2+--I have read many good things about them.

Here's mine with 315s and OME springs (non-J)

No bumpstops lowered yet, stock gears, etc.

Mileage around town dropped about 1mpg but improved on hwy by 1 to 1.5 mpg.

Power sucks, but power already sucked, so I don't try to gun it from a stop -- I'm not beating that 'vette off the line and I know it.

I will be regearing.

NorCal, great pic, I'm almost 100% sure I like the look of 35's and 2.5" lift. My problem mainly is fitment in the garage....pretty lame I know, but I like the look of filled wheelwells too.

The thing about gears, is I don't have the time to screw will all the mods (school) and I have to many toyotas so I have to spread my petty cash between them.

35's on 2.5" OME ?? You must be daft .. evryone here knows how hardcore I am , and even I wouldn't try that ... :flipoff2:

So have you given up on asking for someone to give you a set of 35" tires?

For those that aren't aware click here for a good laugh...

At least you did put it in the correct forum.

Not to hijack...but Kalawang is that a stock rear tire carrier for your non US spec 80? I would like to see more pics of it...

Where are you located?

Thanks

I saw one of these non US spec 80's recently in Belize--I was there for Christmas--took some good digital pictures but it will not work for our trucks ;) They have ambulance doors like the old 40's or suburbans. I will be back to work on Monday--maybe I can figure out how to post a pic....... The one I looked at also had the turbo diesel with a stick :)

have you guys read through the tire size stuff on Slee's site? it's worth reading.. http://www.sleeoffroad.com/technical/tz_35.htm

For now I'm pretty happy with the 295's, but am slowly desiring 35's a little more as the time passes..
I can still get where I need to... for now.

I'd like to add that just because some do it...and just because it fits...slapping 315 without the necessary mods is not necessarily the right thing to do.

I got my 315s when I did because I was able to get one for "free". I had planned on upgrading tire size the right way (as detailed in the instructions posted on slee offroad), but when one of my 285s blew out on the way back from last summer's Rubicon trip, I took advantage of the tire replacement plan I purchased from America's/Discount Tire co. I paid the $20 difference in price between the 285 and the 315 and got the larger tire.

I didn't like the idea of having a non-matching spare, so I ordered the other 4 as well. Had this not occurred, I'd still be rolling on 285 and working on the necessary mods to run 315s.

AHHHH!! I'm tierd of hearing this bull****! Stop it!, my wagon is 90% street, I have other toy's that I have properly setup to wheel. I want the "look" that still can work. Work to a point, I plan to camp and do minor expedition/hill climbs in the 80, I don't need to roll over rocks the size of vw bugs. I feel the 2.5" lift will help me clear the 35's while still flexing as well as stock but with more hieght.

So far I think the biggest thing is the re-gear which I planned to do anyway but now I think it should be done to run the 35's well. So they will be put in when the tires go on.

Bear80 ,

We're all coming at you from 2 or 3 directions . On one extreme , we have very , very capable , and intelligently modded 80's that run 35's and are enviable trail rigs . On the other end of the spectrum are 80's running 35's that stick mostly to streets , and have not applied much of the core crawler mods .

I started at the latter pole , and am slowly translating towards a function over form mentality . Along the way I received great advice .. again I had to rummage thru many opinions , and angles of information all bent upon application to my objectives . But were the opinions really in my best interest ? And by that I simply mean did they always jive with my own vision of what I wanted my 80 to be ? No , of course not .

The building of an 80 is an ever escalating sojourn . We start out wanting slightly bigger tires on a stock truck , and suddenly we're trying to squeeze 36's under a 4" lift . Before you know it you've left the street :princess: behind in the asphalt and transcend into something capable of nearly anything but fitting back into the garage .. ;)

One thing to keep in mind along this journey is that your goals are sometimes better understood by a man that walking in those footprints 'now' ... pick 1 , 2 or even 3 guys out this crowd , whose rigs you really admire (for YOUR own reasonings ) , and strive to emulate them . PM then when you have the cash and are serious about moving forward , and ask them for the recipe .. quiz them with an intelligent and succint line of questions which upon being answered , will flesh out the holes in your vision .. providing you with a tangeable reference ...

These are exciting times for you , and I hope build something that tickles you pink ..

Cheers ,

TY
