Howdy-

So I found my issues are in my tires for death wobble. I am trying to decide between 33" and 35" tires on my basically stock (4" lift) 40. All my steering is healthy now.

What about braking? Are the stock calipers and rotors up to the task? Mostly a DD with weekend trips to Moab, and Colorado triails

What about my axles, they are stock. Will they become a weak link running that big of a meat?

What about gearing. High country, 7-8000 ft up to 10,000 ft. Will I see too much of a loss of power with a 2f and 4.11's? Are 4.56 kind of required?

Thanks again!

I run 36" TSLs on stock running gear and 4.11s. Gearing is too high for off roading. I confirmed that in Moab last week. If you are going with BFGs or MTRs, they will be lighter than swampers and a little friendlier on the highway, but you will still see some power loss. You will get about 20% over drive on the 35s though.

The axle should handle 35's no problem. With Long's birf upgrade some are running 39.5

You should be fine....

Strength shouldn't be an issue. But I would consider power steering. You will certainly think of it off road with a 12.50 tire and manual steering. Also I would stick with 33's if you are going to do much low speed stuff. I run 33's on my 79, which is roughly geared about like you would be on 35's. It's definately not geared low enough for the slow stuff. I unfortunately don't wheel it much, so it doesn't matter right now. But when the time comes I'll have to do some more drivetrain work.

So the axles are up to it.

What about the brakes? Will I need to upgrade?

I broke a lot of birfields and early Newfields with 33" tires....yes, your birfields are the weak link, definitely carry a spare, and definitely open up the housing so you can run the slightly larger 79+/minitruck birfs (which is what 99.9% of all Toy peeps carry for spares...and what all aftermarket specs match)

Brakes are just fine with 35's, but your stopping distance will extend a bit.

I now run 39.5 IROKS with 4340 inners and 4340 Longfields, no breakage on those yet....a very worthwhile upgrade, IMO.

I run 35.5" Q78 swampers - 4 wheel disc and had to go to 4.88s just because I didn't like the fact my 4spd turned into a 3spd transmission - got good mileage for the first time ever when I had the stock 4.11s

You should be fine, just pay more attention to keeping your brakes adjusted -

You will haul ass in 4LO -

You could also get Woody's SM465 plate kit and swap in one for the gearing. I think you will be a little week on the top end w/ the 2f.

Run it.. Have fun wheel then make decisions!

Drew?

No problems for brakes/axles...though Longs would be a great upgrade.

I ran 33s with 4.11s

I run 35s with 4.56s

I'd not hessitate to run 35s and 4.11s, at least for the few years it would take to save for 4.56s

I assume you are trailering to Moab from Iowa.

I don't know your budget, so, I'd say go with the 33's. If you wanna flex it out more, go with extended shackles, trim the fenders, & run the 35's. As said earlier, slap in a pair of mini birfs at least. DO NOT install a locker in the front unless you wanna learn things the hard way. Your brakes should be fine the way they are. Down the road, if you think you need lower gearing, do the SM tranny swap before goin' in the diffs. Good luck dude!

Ok, I am not bragging just saying what I run. I have the stock drive train except for the SM420. Stock front axle/2F/SM420/3spdTC/stock rear axle. I have run 38" TSLs for 4 years now. I have never broke a birfield, or anything else for that matter on the drive train. My son did brake the pinion about 3 years though. He was driving not me. The stock drive train can easily handle 35" tires. My only complaint is it is sloooow going up the hills and gets 8 mpg  Chevy 350 next year :bounce: Yea right, I said that last year.

IMO Your axles will handle the tire size with no problems. I've driven my rig to Moab and back 2200+ miles three years in a row with a 1500 lbs. tent trailer in tow. No failures yet.

are 4.88 diffs available in anything from factory. or are they aftermarket

4.88 will be aftermarket...never heard of anything factory in that ratio for the 40 stuff.

I am heading out to Boulder, CO this summer for a relocation with my job. Will the 35's make my cruiser start to dog going up the pass?

I dont think I want to get into regearing and most of my plans include traveling to Moab and Zion, and backcountry trails in Colorado. As well as handle my DD responsibilities.

Thanks Rezarf <><

I don't think you'll have much fun with 35s and stock 4.11s myself - probably alright in Iowa but you won't get much use of 4th gear going up the the freeway

After you get to the top, you should be in good shape though, everything you are planning to see in Utah is downhill from the Eisenhower tunnel or Monarch pass :D

4.88s are slow, my cruising speed is around 55 - good for dirt, not good for freeway

Good luck.

if your coming from iowa
