I found some 35 inch mud terrains on 16x8 American Eagle rims for sale that I would like to purchase. I looked up the backspacing on the rims and it is 4.5 inches. From searching I have found that our stock rims are around 3.5 in backspacing. I am planning a mild lift of 2-4 in and if I buy these I will be trimming the fenders. Has anyone gone with this much backspacing? The extra inch of backspacing will bring the tire closer to the car and shorten my stance correct? This will also mean more trimming correct? Will there be any interference with steering or components other than sheet metal?

Please let me know if I’m on the right path. Also, anyone running 35’s SUA with 2-4 inches of lift please post. ESPECIALLY if you went with 4.5 inch backspacing.

Depending on what you have for steering (manual, toyota power steering, saginaw) you will likely have issues with the 4.5 backspacing and interference. You'll also be looking at having to trim A LOT off the rear fenders, and you'll probably be rubbing inside the wheel wells too.

Edit: I was thinking 40, not 60... probably will still have rubbing.

Most wheels run 3.5- 3.75" BS, these will stick inwards more and possibly rub on your steering arm or calipers, but may clear because they are a 16" wheel. I would get spacers or get something else.
I am currently running DC-1's 16x10 with 4.5"BS and 1.5" spacers in front and 2" in the rear, on 39.5" tires.

Thanks codyc.

Has anyone run this back spacing without wheel spacers?

Just found out that the backspacing is 4.0 inches and NOT 4.5 inches. This shouldn't pose a problem correct?

I have 4.0 on my 15x10's and 35" BFG's MT's. No wheel issues.

I am running 33's on 8x15 wheels with 1 inch spacer, SUA and it looks like OME MED. 2-3 inch worn out spings, did rubicon this year. no issues. The PO had 35's so it is ok to do i think, Ohh i forgot i have a 1 inch body lift too.
hope this helps.
cheers

ome heavy front extended length anti inversion shackles and 2 inch body lift running bfg mud terrain 35x12.5 on wagon wheels i believe 3.5 backspace. lately whheeling has rubbed the inner fenders on mostly on the rear but also a little on ther front. And this is with a little front and rear outer and inner fender trimming. It sounds annoying while wheeling but it is only on hte extreme twists and no damage yet

good luck

At 4 inches back spacing your biggest worry is going to be rubbing the TRE and calipers, but see if you can try them on for size.

I bought them! Now I have to fit them! They are Goodyear MTR's 35x12.5x16 mounted with aluminum polished rims for $800. Tread is almost new as the tire has all the mold injection spots still on it. Unfortunately I'll be away for the next two weeks so they will sit and taunt me, waiting for an appropriate lift and fender trim.

I was thinking SUA but then again I was thinking 33's until these came up. I haven't fully committed to SUA to I'll read up on SOA until I can get a clear picture painted in my head. The cut and turn sound daunting at first.

Does anyone have a SOA rig in SoCal I can visit?

just to keep it simple, my 2 cents would be run the 35's SUA make um fit, have fun doing it. then after you do more research and brain storming go with th SOA if thats the road you want to go. I am kinda in the same boat now, but i have decided to stay SUA for quite awhile, just enjoy how it worked.

When do drive line angles become a problem with lift? Who has had to get new driveshafts beacuase of their lift?

Probably gonna try SUA first like you chappys then we'll see if I get ambitious.

I'm SOA, but I'm all the way down in San Diego. I believe there are quite a few sprung over wagons in the LA area though.

As far as driveline issues, I can't give you the exact lift height limit before mods need to be done. I started with the OME suspension with stock driveshafts, and when I went SOA, I did Tom Woods CV shafts front and rear. From reading other threads in the past, it seems once you hit the 4"+ suspension lift, you will get vibes with the stock driveshafts. I know one guy here has 4" parabolic springs running SUA and he had some pretty nasty driveline issues.

My lift caused hella driveshaft issues. They are almost sorted out. After a good wheeling trip/beat run the lift dropped at least an inch. The lift is supposed to be 100mm but I still have about 160mm from it. I didn't have to have new shafts made though.

What lift was this??? You lost an inch and still have over 6" of lift???

I have a not quite yet available Heystee Automotive Parabolic SUA system. Look for the writeup very soon. Coming to a website near YOU!

I'm gonna be gone for two weeks. I'll check out your progress when I get back in town.

I need to visit some SOA 60's near L.A. area. If anyone is available late July or early August, I'd like to see the final job.
