33 12.50 on stock wheels

I've got 33x10.5 on my stock wheels, but I was told that anything wider should be on a wider rim. The other thing is that the costco's down here in SoCal won't even put tires on that are not the factory size...I was not happy. I had to take my tires off the truck somewhere else to get them done.
 
One thing everybody failed to acknowledge is that tire widths (diameter as well for that matter) vary greatly per manufacturer. The TSL radial is a very skinny build compared to others I have run. I originally went in search of a 33/10.50 TSL. The tire shop said 'lets mount a 12.50 and see what you think". The 12.50 was the winner hands down. Just a thought.
 
The rule of thumb that I use for proper wear/ handling is use a rim width that is very close to the tread width. Not the overall width, just the tread width. Most 12.50's only have a 10-10.5" tread width, so a 10" wide wheel is preferred You can stuff a fat tire on a norrow rim, but there are reasons that manufacturers have a min/max allowance. Tire stores are being more careful about it because of lawsuits regarding such mismatched combinations. It is eisier for the tire stores to do the right thing and not get sued, than mount whatever tire on whatever rim, and take their chances.

Off-road with a narrower rim, you are less likely to damage a sidewall because it is pulled in at an angle away from rocks & such. So leaning to the narrower wheel is usually better for offroad, but the wider wheel will make the tire handle better on the road.

I would not run a 12.50 on the factory 6" wide wheel. Most 33x9.50's are discontinued, but you could run the 33x10.50's. The stock wheels are still a bit on the narrow side. 7" would be rec, 8" preferred.

Good luck getting anybody to mount the 12.50's on 6" wheels. It would be an independent store, because they are less likely to get sued than a big store w/ deep pockets.
 
I have them and the rub at extreme turns as well as at articulation. I will be going with wider rims when these are done or if I can sell them.

I don't see how rim width is going to make a difference in rubbing. Assuming the backspacing is the same between the two wheels, the inboard side of the tire is in the same place. Spacers or a much smaller backspacing is the only way to move the tire outboard.
 
It is not wise to run a 12.5 or 12 for that matter on a 6 inch rim in the rocks or when your jumping around.Lots of folks do it get away with it for a while but there is always that chance you will blow a bead or bend the 6inch wide 62's aluminum rim in the rocks.......i have done it not fun.

I also had 33 12 by 50's on my 62 for a short while the rim being that narrow caused a high point in the middle of the tire needless to say that caused un- even wear on all 4 tires....but some have no troubles:meh:

Think about it! The center line of the rim and tire do not change when changing tire size. As the tire gets wider that extra width is distributed on BOTH sides of the rim, more tire inboard and more tire outboard. It's the more tire inboard that rubs. 31x10.5x15 did not rub but the extra 2" does rub.

If I have a wider rim but the same backspacing then the centerline will move out and away from the truck and no more rub!

when your 62 see's 2000 miles a year or less and the tires are free this is not an issue.
 
Costco can be a pain. Took my 62 for some new LTX's and they would not sell me the ones they had in stock. They were 105s load rating. The Lancrusier calls for 108s due to the fact that the recommended inflation the the rear is over 40 psi.

Ended up getting the 108 rating tires but had to order them. Costco won't put anything on the car that was not stock. Guess when I go to some taller tires, will have to give my money to Discount
