Bought a FJ40 in bits & it came with a Chevy V8. Got a 305 for a really good price so want to put this in.

Currently, running 2F engine with the 3 spd box. The box that came with the car has been stripped & is in pieces........

Now, what do I need in terms of bell housing etc to get the 305 in. Do I use the 3spd box?

Anyone have pics of engine + box so that I can see what I have.......

I'd be thinking 305 with 700R4 auto tranny adapted to stock 3 speed transfer-case. Not only will the automatic give you all the advantages of an auto(better hill climber, torque multiplication, drive train cushioning, etc.), but the 700R4 has a lower first gear and overdrive high gear!!!!!

I switched my old carbed 350, which leaked oil like the Exxon Valdez, to a TBI 305 and have hated it ever since. The TBI is awesome, but the 305 is just too underpowered from what I was used to. I have since bought a TBI 350 to swap in over the next couple of weeks. The 305 would probably be okay with a gear change, but with ARB's I don't want to grind gears to make them fit. My biggest issue is in the low end power and I have to get the engine revs too high to make the rig go over big obstacles leading to a loss of control feeling. I should probably change gears with the 350 too, but it not near as noticeable due to the power difference.

I also have the 700R4, and if you use the AA adapter be prepared to flip your rear springs in order to have the drive shaft fit. Even then, the drive shaft is approximately 12-14". Despite this, I LOVE my auto. It's probably the best overall mod that I have done other than lockers for overall peace of mind on crazy obstacles.

Great, thanks for the replies guys

Any pics??

no pics?? :-(

I agree with Clint that a 305 is not going to have the hill climbing grunt of a 350, but in defense of the 305:
(a) it will outperform the pants off the stock 6 cyl.
(b) I doubt anything will get better milage.
(c) a desmogged 305 will produce more h.p. than a smogged 350
I have had both myself and nothing ever got better milage than the 305, but I absolutely love the low end torque/hill climbing of the 350. Here's some Gee Whiz information:
(a) 305 torque is about 240 lbs., 350 is about 300+ lbs.
(b) 305 h.p. is about 270, smogged down 350 is about 170.
Disclaimer: GM makes about a gazillion choices, don't nail me on specifics!!!

Here are some in my ROTW. 305 block is the same as a 350 block, identical mounting points and transmission mounts.

I did a TPI 305 out of an 85 camaro. It loves to rev (really awesome power to 6000 RPM) but not tons of low-end grunt. My QJET 350 had way more low-end torque.
But I love the cold starts and smooth idle/reving on the hiway of the fuel injection. The 305 is really easy to cool also, it doesn't matter running 4-5K rpm in 2nd gear up the mountain hiway or crawling on the trail it is rock solid @ 195 deg. I always had overheating problems with the 350.

The 305 is a horrible motor. You mash down the pedal on any car with a 305 you hear an unholy sucking noise and you don't go anywhere.

305 vs 350

305 with flat top pistons and the right cam (not many good choises for 305) wil go head to head with the stock desmoged 350 with far better gas mileage.Got one already built for my next build.

You would be better off in the long run putting in a 350. A 305 piston is about the diameter of a coke can, a true emisson friendly engine.

AH! this is so true  very funny i almost fell off my chair .:grinpimp:
350 would be better ,throw a mild cam in it and you will get alot more grunt out of it than the 305.i had a 305 and always heard that horible sucking sound  switched to 350 and never looked back

, Jake

3 speed marginal

From what I've read 3-speed trans will not last. I'd use a 4-speed toy box or a sm 465 on new venture 5-speed (or auto).

I've got a Toy 4-speed and 350 and they work great and have tons of grunt to spare (300 +/- hp). Although many don't like 305s you own it and it can easily be swapped out if you want more hp.:D

I had a 1984 Pontiac Trans Am with a 305 GMC truck motor... I could pull a really small boat, but I would have trouble drag racing a moped. Trans was rebuilt 2 times because it kept falling out and over 60k all of the suspension was shot. Oh and as a bonus, it drank down gas, you could sit in the car and watch the gauge go down while idling. What an incredible piece of junk! Thank you GM homogenization. Now can someone in the government get their head out of their butt and split GM into all the individual companies so that they can compete?

Oh and I was just reminded by a friend, I was once smoked by a late 80's Volvo at a stop light. Yeap GM sure knows how to make all the right decisions in making products. Shiesh!
