Before this entire virus catastrophe I visited some family in Japan and I got to drive the third generation Prado and it is an amazing vehicle inside and out and I would love for it to be a replacement for the 4Runner and Land Cruiser in the US, but I don’t see that happening.

You can. They sold the GX470 in the US. Essentially a fancy 3rd gen Prado.

I wouldn't mind the international prado. The version we get here in the US is kind of a monstrosity with it's low hanging predator style grill.

The Prado would sell well here. But would displace 4Runner and GX sales. What makes most sense, but not likely to happen:
-cancel 4Runner
-sell Prado in the US
-sell LC in lower trims in the US
-reserve top trim/luxury package for Lexus in the Prado and LC

I’m not sure how Toyota manages to be so disconnected from what the market wants in the US 4WD market. Almost have to try to mess it ya as bad as they seem to do.

I drove a diesel Prado in Costa Rica a few years back. The GX is superior, at least when comparing the two vehicles around 2015.

I like the 4R, personally. Well, all except the 4th gen... not sure why but as a former 3rd gen owner it just never did it for me. The 5th/6th gen 4R isn't in the same class as the LC, and for us was just too small and underpowered for our towing and long trips, but they are very capable and half the cost (or better) of an LC. I hate to say it but if it was just me and the wife and a smaller camper I would've been hard-pressed to drop the coin on an LC

So I saw this pic on a YouTube video of the 300 rear end. It’s from the same set of “leaked” photos previously shared but never saw this particular one before. Think it’s legit?

A few interesting tidbits from the audio in this video:

- can be ordered in March (ie. now?)
- vehicles will be built starting with April
- on the roads in June
- expected federal budget deficit (in Russia) due to needing to move all of the big shots over to new Cruisers
- the start button will have a fingerprint reader that will be tied to the driver's fingerprints (uhhh whaat?!); this will activate the driver's "profile" (seat, multimedia settings, etc.)
- 3.0L V6; ("same as in the Lexus LS")
- 10 speed transmission; same as on the LS
- hybrid drivetrain expected in the later years
- new turbodiesel option w/ the current 6 speed

The 3rd Gen 4Runner is about as good as it gets. I'd take it over most SUVs, many Land Cruiser series' included. Still one of the favorite vehicles I've owned.

The 5th Gen would be a solid choice for most people, though anemic, very capable.

I think if Toyota dc'd or replaced the 4Runner and the 4R nameplate it would be devastating to their off-road SUV lineup. If you think about the demographic of most 4R buyers it's probably the 20-30 something crowd looking to get into an affordable off-road platform. The name is cool, the heritage is there, the fanbase is large, and it's an attractive package for new buyers. The name Prado means nothing to US buyers and they'd have to somehow call a Prado a 4R while differentiating it from a Lexus GX. Replacing it with a Prado and realistically if this were to happen it would be a Lexus GX platform would command a starting price of $55k+. Add some sort of GX-OR package and you're pushing $60k. That's out of reach for many buyers in the 4R demographic. The beauty of a 4R is that it's relatively cheap, reliable, capable and just a practical vehicle. Toyota would lose tons of sales if they let go of the 4R and now that the LC is truly dc'd it's even a more important vehicle for them. They really need to step up and compete with the Wrangler or Bronco for their 6th gen model. I somehow remain hopeful but a lot remains to be seen.

Finshed all of the paperwork to buy a 2021 Silver Land Cruiser with the terra semi-aniline leather interior and all weather floor mats around 6:30 pm on 11 MAR 2021 in Mesa, AZ. I test drove it the day before with 15 miles showing on the odometer. The LC was built 20 DEC 2020 and it appears it showed up at this dealership about 15 JAN 2021 for the per-delivery work.

The "great deal" was list price instead of a $10,000 dealer extra gouging profit surcharge. They were definitely very "conservative" in valuing my trade-in, a 2020 Highlander Platinum with only 8,100 miles. Their attitude was take it or the next chap will. Within 20 minutes of my starting the purchase process there were about four calls wanting to buy this particular LC. As a Monday morning quarterback, I should have bought the LC last June instead of the Highlander.....

My wife trusted my decision to acquire the LC. Today she drove it and was very pleased with the appearance and handling. She liked the few storage spaces to fiorce me to discard all the duplicate stuff I usually have in a car.

Se we add the over 40 mpg of her 2020 Rav4 Hybrid to the hopefully 16 mpg highway of the LC and the average is about 28 mpg for the two of us. Looking at the gasoline use this way makes the LC seem more reasonable.

So in the next few days I will determine the necessary modifications for a new Hensley Arrow stinger to be able to tow our 2015 Airstream 23D International Serenity. I plan to order the 12,5 gallon auxiliary gasoline tank over the weekend. The numbers should work out well for this pairing.

My eye balls are spinning reading all of the great information here.

How can you possibly think this? Toyota is worth hundreds of billions of dollars and sells more cars total than literally any other manufacturer. What gives you that idea?

Pretty much the same size
so what I said about wheelbase being longer turned out to be incorrect, rest is confirmed.
2850 IS the magic number.

A few thousand enthusiasts scattered across online forums does not make a "market."

Millions of suburban soccer moms buying vehicles based on the number of cupholders does.

Interesting
We are getting a GR off road version in the middle east, supposedly dubbed the GR-S.

Maybe this is the US version when they decide to bring it back to the US in a year or two? Or maybe something to do with a future 4R/Tacoma/Tundra

Anyway too soon to really tell, the actual 300 isn't even out yet....

I think it goes without saying Toyota is an extremely well-run business that sells hundreds of thousands of vehicles every year. I think it also goes without saying Toyota makes what seem like questionable decisions at times and are missing out on parts of the enthusiast market that create and bolster desirability, lore, and future sales. Off-road oriented platforms are selling like hot cakes and Toyota kills off the Land Cruiser. Last year I bought a car that would have been a Supra if the Supra wasn't a BMW.

Toyoda is a well run very BORING car company that has a mid-level BMW as its HALO car...

Every 14 year old "car head" has a poster of a 2021 Toyota Supra hanging on his wall dreaming of a re-badge BMW 4 series. with an automatic transmission...

I don't know if alienating the top income/purchasing power demographic group of your products would be considered "well run" when G-Wagons are just a click away.

If Toyoda doesn't want Land Cruiser customers cluttering their showrooms plenty of other brands do...

Rope off those Halo Supra's in the showroom Toyoda, everyone is drooling on them... LOL !!!

You BLEW IT TOYODA !!! 60 Years of name plate recognition as the "Real Deal" in off-roaders and you just quit because ???

Drink some New Coke with your marketing team and enjoy starring at your new BMWyota racecar...

You made this...
