I ordered a rebuild kit from Kurt at cruiseroutfitters and began rebuilding my TC. I've never done this before and have been going through the tech articles here. After reinstalling my output shaft I noticed there was some play in the shaft left to right. Maybe about 1/4" to 1/8" of an inch. I installed new races and bearings w/ the rebuild. I don't know what I need to do to fix this play. I've attached some pics so you can see what I'm talking about. Any help is much appreciated.

Nick

If the play is in the main output shaft (and not the front shaft), then the play is removed by setting the preload on the bearings with shims. You need to add more shims under the rear bearing retainer to squeeze the races tighter and remove the play. The preload is defined as the amount of torque required to turn the parking brake drum and the spec is listed in the FSM.

yea! what HE said!

Thanks a bunch pinhead. I didn't have any shims with my transfer case or at least any that I saw. I'm going to have to order some from MAF or SOR I guess to get this fixed.

looks like you forgot the washers that are installed between the gears and the bearing races.

part number 25 in this pic.

I think I was missing a few parts to start with. The PO had taken the TC out before I bought it and I don't think everything made it back in. I only had 1 of those washers. The parts diagram looks like it calls for 2. I also didn't have part # 33.

washers 25 are standard thickness. any parts t-case or the dealer will be a source. the #33 is the shim set. lots of rebuild kits are missing these. order a range from the dealer. you will need a bunch to pick from to get the preload correct. dont be shy.

I ordered the shims (4 of them) from my local Toyota.

FYI for anyone else needing these shims the part numbers are below:

90564-64017 = .1
90564-64023 = .15
90564-64024 = .2
90564-64025 = .25

They were about $1.00 a piece. Thanks to Kurt at cruiseroutfitters for the part numbers.

Looks like you still need a washer and sombody recently posted that they are no longer available from Toyota. If that is true, you can still get one from one of the usual vendors on the site.

I found the other washer. It was stuck to the back of one of my old bearings. Had to order a new oil seal b/c I ruined one of my new ones after I forgot to put a snap ring in and had to pull out my new seal.

Also ordered a new mechanical assembly and getting rid of my vacuum shift assembly so I can use my AA twin stick shifter.

Glad to hear you were able to get the shims on the cheap

It is something I am going to look into including into our rebuild kits, or at least having them as a retail part in our parts system that we can offer to customers.
