Ok here's the deal. I can get a free 92 ext cab 4cylndr 2wd toyota. I want to eventually make it into a four seater formula toy. Since i'd have to toss the ifs in a 92 4wd to put a SA in it I figure that the only thing really needed that i'm missing is a t-case. So here's the question with all that in minde will a solid axle conversion kit work for a 2wd kit to get the solid axle up there. I also have a lead on a t-case I can get for it. Will this work. Selling it to buy a 4wd to start with won't really work as there is a huge dent in the roof where a tree fell on it. (this is why it is perfect to ditch the body for a formula toy) And since the ifs is going to go any way I don't really need all of that stuff. So how hard will this be???????

The rear axle is different in 2wd trucks, only a 7.5" vs. 8". The steering box may be different too I'm not sure. SAS kits will work on a 2wd frame though.

thanks thats what i needed to know.
i know of a v6 rear that i can throw under this thing

The 2wd frame is a trade off, it has a higher arch than the ifs 4wd frame, so more up travel is available and the 2wd suspension brackets are easier to cut off. On the downside, it doesn't have as much internal plating, so slightly weaker. The cross member that anchors the torsion needs to be removed and brackets added for a new trans/transfer cross member.

The 2wd steering box will work, but is weaker and you will probably want to move it forward, so I would replace it with a 4wd IFS box.

I have heard that some of the 2wd trans can be converted, but is a bunch of work, I would get a 4wd trans with gear drive transfer.

The exhaust pipe interferes with the trans/transfer, needs to be modified.

It's a load of work, but has been done.

thanks for the info

Not too hard to find a replacement

I'd just sell the 2wd trans and get a used 4wd one to replace with dual t-cases

Planning on a custon exhaust... so not too bad

It's a crapload of work, but it's been done many times. You'll definitely want to swap out the rear axle too, the 2WD axle is only 5-lug, and is sprung-under. You're also gonna have to swap the oil pans on the engine, the 2WD pan has the sump in the front, it will be in the way. 2WD front fenders are also very different, but doesn't sound like the body is gonna survive the transition anyway. Good luck!
