Hello! I need some help once again. Today I stopped at the gas station and I was shocked. For 385km I needed 70l of fuel. That means 18l/100km or 13mpg. I came to the point, where my injectors are redone, fuel filter is new, no drag on the wheels, no oversized tires. Can the injection pump cause such a bad mileage? I had somebody take a look and he was mentioning the grey connector on the picture is probably causing the problems. He also said, the pump is leaking. He also told me to turn the pump about 2mm clockwise from the marks for timing.
My question is, can the pump leak into the engine? I get smoking start ups even 1 hour after stopping the car.
Does anybody have a description for the pump? What is the grey connector related to?
I think, this is the right time to change the pump... :frown:
Thanks in advance!

While I have no idea what your problem might be I can tell you that based on my experience you should be averaging fuel economy in the mid to low 20's. ................1978HJ45

thanks, I hope I'll get to that point soon.

Fortunately you live in an area where there are garages that have experience with 70 Series Cruisers. Most garages ( even the good ones) here in the States have never even seen a 70 Series.
Good luck..........1978HJ45

No manual ( other than an owners manual in Japanese.) Fortunately the LJ78 has been basically trouble free thus far.

Carefully open the hood, and with the engine cold, jack up the radiator cap about 30 cms. Once you have done that, hold the cap in place while you back the LJ78 out from under it. Now, get yourself an HZJ77 or a PZJ77 and drive it back under the rad cap. Lower the rad cap into place. Dispose of the LJ78. Problem solved.

All 2LTE powered vehicles are nothing but trouble. I am getting tired of helping people fix these engines and the money pits the cars they were installed in have become. Save yourself the grief of long time ownership and get a different vehicle.

In the short term, fix the fuel leaks and be done. Don't put another dime in that 2LTE powered dog and move on.

Trust me, this will be the best piece of advice you will get on this forum about a Prado or Surf or whatever has a 2LTE in it: get rid of it.

Hasn't your cylinder head been done?

The head was indeed replaced by the previous owner some time ago ( along with other mods.), so allow me to add that the LJ78 has been trouble free while "I have owned it." If I lead anyone to believe otherwise...my bad. ...........1978HJ45

Thanks John! Nice try. Sometimes I catch my self thinking about other one. My wife can't stand that. You know, some people create an relationship to their cars. It is difficult, but we really like our cars :)
cheers, Tom

Remember no matter what happens you will always have that radiator cap:):) Good luck ..............1978HJ45

well i just check your truck,it has lot of blow by on the breather! what does this tells you, even though you have 480 psi cranking pressure, does not tell you, your engine is in good shape. the connector is for injection timing control.blowby mean the engine internal need attention.simple as that.

"All 2LTE powered vehicles are nothing but trouble. I am getting tired of helping people fix these engines and the money pits the cars they were installed in have become. It took me about one year to figure out that people live in huge denial about the vehicles they drive and there is no way to change them. People also fall in love with them and can't see any of the bad stuff only the good. As mechanics we are always put in a position of being the mediator. All vehicles can be fixed. We may think it's not worth it but it's not always up to us. If you don't have a reasonable answer to a question then don't post, especially negatively.
I'am getting just as tried of hearing you complain as you are of trying fixing these monsters. Every manufacture of vehicles have monsters in the closet and it isn't going to change.

Well i have been in this business over 30 years,my english are not that good,,, so excuse. this nice person came to me this afternoon & i check it out for him free & tell him what is going on. he left, thanks me for that, welcome & now i c him post on the net asking for help, what more can i do to help. the breather has so much blow by to the point that you can see visible blue smoke! engine do not sound healthy ,sound rough to me,,, now you tell me should i just keep quiet or,,, help me out.thanks in advance. infect i am just trying to help him out on that situation ,it is up to him to decide what to do,his injectors are just done by fred holmes. compression are tested by others shop with 480 psi across & bunch of others test are done by other mechanics & finally come to me for advice.so tell me did i make a bad post?

You did a great job hybric4x4diesel. You told him what you felt was the issue and didn't cut him down saying there is no hope. You and I feel the same way. It is up to the customer to decide even if we don't like it. We give them a honest answer and it is for them to decide. My main point was not directed at you, but at so called professional people on this sight that have the opinion that if they can't figure it out, and they feel there isn't a cost efective solution simply sell it. Good luck trying to sell something that dosn't work and then passing the burden on to some one else. I appreciate your post because we now have given an un biased look into this situation.

Take Care.

Sorry hybric4x4diesel. I didn't know your name was John I was referring to another John.
Take Care.
